Finding the best race car driver in the world is a hard ask. There are numerous different arcing series and championships in the world. It ranges from sprint races to endurance runs on and off-track circuits. The championships are so diverse and demand different skill sets from each competitor. Every championship has its own champions and legends. Comparing those and selecting the best among them is an impossible task.
One benchmark to differentiate these drivers is their versatility. While most championships are heavily concerned about one unique set of tracks and characters, few championships demand drivers to be a jack of all trades to be the best. The premier open-wheel racing series Formula 1, the fastest motor racing sport in the world, which are not short sprints, challenges its drivers with Road Courses and Street courses that are hard to slay. IndyCar takes it to the next level by adding Oval tracks.
The premier stock car racing series NASCAR has a couple more unique tracks to offer. They race in Superspeedways, dirt tracks, Road Courses, and street circuits. This earns the NASCAR drivers, especially the cup drivers, the title of the most versatile drivers. NASCAR veteran driver Landon Cassill has come forth to express his thoughts on the versatility of his fellow competitors compared to the rest of the motor racing world.
“NASCAR drivers are the most versatile professional racing drivers in the world. More surfaces, racing styles, track types, than any series. F1 driver is a true specialist-focused on singular style of racing, while a modern Cup Series driver must be a jack of all trades,” he tweeted on May 1, asking fans to engage in a discussion on it.

Landon Cassill is under no impression that the most versatile means the best
Cassill is under no impression that the most versatile means the drives are the best. He pointed out that the Cup drivers rank ahead of F1, IndyCar, Rally, and Supercars in terms of versatility. He added that it doesn’t necessarily make them the best, and it’s an entirely different conversation.
“I would say IndyCar drivers are more versatile than F1 drivers, V8 supercars, Rally, and probably most other forms of motorsports. But not more versatile than a Cup Series driver. Not debating who is “better” or “more talented” or “outstanding”. Just focusing on versatility,” he tweeted later.
