Martin Treux Jr. has declared that he will prolong his retirement and return to Joe Gibbs Racing for the 2024 season after flirting with the notion for a few months. On Saturday, the 2017 Champion stated that he would continue to drive the No. 19 Toyota Camry for another year. With three race wins and a strong performance in 2023, the 43-year-old hopes for another successful season with the team.
Despite facing challenges in the previous season, Truex Jr. came into 2023 with a renewed determination. He focused on improving his understanding of the cars, enhancing his qualifying performance, and maintaining consistency throughout the races. This strategy paid off as he clinched three victories, breaking a 54-race winless streak and a dominant display at New Hampshire, where he led an impressive 254 of 301 laps. Truex currently leads the championship over Denny Hamlin by 39 points.
At the media center at Michigan Speedway, Truex Jr. finally revealed his long-awaited decision. After dodging the question about his future for a couple of months now, “It’s your lucky day,” he said. Treux declared, “I’m coming back” for the 2024 season. When asked about his motivation, he simply asserted, “Because I want to.”
This comes after he declared his decision to continue racing in June of the 2022 season. Last year, Truex Jr. was considering retirement after experiencing a challenging 2022 season without a win, narrowly missing out on the playoffs. This time, he took a bit longer to decide, jokingly stating, “Last year was June, this year was August, so … give me [until] October next year,” before revealing his plan to race in 2025.

Although Truex Jr. had a better season this year, he expressed that it didn’t feel right to step away without continuing what they had been doing. He was hoping for a memorable exit by retiring as a champion. Nevertheless, with his success on the track, Truex Jr. remains committed to the sport and is excited about the upcoming season.
Truex Jr. disclosed that he had been leaning towards returning for a few weeks before finalizing his decision. He also spoke about his brother, Ryan Truex, and their hopes for more races next year. While Ryan will continue driving part-time, they are actively seeking sponsorship for him to secure a full-time deal, further solidifying their racing legacy.
Truex Jr. acknowledges the responsibility that comes with signing on the dotted line. He knows that many have high expectations, and he aims to deliver and continue his winning ways. With his determination, skill, and support from Joe Gibbs Racing, fans can expect to see more thrilling performances from Martin Truex Jr. as he looks to make the 2024 season one to remember.
