Joe Gibbs Racing’s Martin Truex Jr.’s retirement has been a major discussion point in the racing community since the start of the era. The 2017 Cup champion has been teasing his departure from the sport since the start of the 2022 season. Truex Jr’s contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024 season, and he is yet to make a decision on 2025.

Recently, during a media session with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, the No:19 Toyota Camry driver discussed the possibility of retirement. This is when the host made a bold prediction. He told Truex Jr. that he would retire at the end of the 2024 season as the reigning champion. The veteran admitted that he might do that if things turned out as predicted.

I mean, it's a hell of a prediction. I will be okay with that. I could see myself doing that.
Martin Truex Jr. responded.

The champion driver would be in a great position to win the title in 2024, as the JGR cars have been fast in both the LA Clash and the Daytona 500. The team failed last year due to poor execution. Going into the 2024 season, they have notes on approaching the year to succeed.

Martin Truex Jr. explains why it is hard for him to make the retirement call

The host asked Truex Jr. what his decision would be this season and why he has been playing with retirement in the last two seasons. The veteran pointed out that he hasn’t yet decided because he is pretty bad at making big decisions.

The host then asked Truex Jr. whether retirement was just a game from him to get a better deal at Joe Gibbs Racing. The TRD driver jokingly admitted that Gibbs isn’t the person who would let such games affect him, and such moves won’t work on Coach.

If the No:19 team can perform on a higher level in 2024, there is a really good chance that Martin Truex Jr. will extend his contract. But his retirement after winning the title would be the better story and a great legacy.
