Micheal McDowell wanted NASCAR Cup Series rookie Ty Gibbs to understand that he was unhappy with him during the race at North Wilkesboro Speedway. In the 100-lap All-Star race open, Gibbs made contact with McDowell on Lap 57. It was a three-wide battle with Kaulig Racing driver Justin Haley. During this unfortunate incident, McDowell and Haley crashed while Gibbs went to advance to the main event.
Ty Gibbs, who was on the lead, had to lap McDowell’s damaged car 20 laps after their incident. However, the No.34 Ford Mustang driver did not make it easy for the youngster, resulting in another contact. The incident cost Gibbs the race win. He finished second after fending off Stewart Haas Racing veteran Aric Almirola. Meanwhile, McDowell finished 13th.
After the All-Star Open, Micheal McDowell did not hold back his anger. He told Fox Sports 1, “We ended up on the short side of it. It sucks. Felt like we had a pretty fast Ford Mustang, but at the same time, all that stuff comes around man. You can get away with it a few times, but it comes around. I don’t have the budget for the fine, otherwise, I would not be standing here. I would be standing down there.
Micheal McDowell says he got a lot of damage from the collision with Ty Gibbs
Micheal McDowell added, “It’s short track racing to try and get into the All-Star Race. Somebody is going to leave with hurt feelings and I guess it’s me. I got a great restart there, kind of worked the outside and got a couple of guys. Was able to get down, but Ty just plowed into me. Just knocked me into the No. 31 (Haley) and spun us both out. Got a lot of damage from that.”
While McDowell expressed his frustration, Ty Gibbs justified his move on him. He stated that these things happen, and it was a fair game. He wanted to race and make it to the All-Star Race. Gibbs admitted he understood McDowell’s frustration, but in the end, he got in, and that’s what matters to him. The contact between the duo stirred up a lot of emotions.
The one good thing is that Justin Haley, the third driver involved in the incident on Lap 57, was not upset. Though he had all the reason to get angry as he could not advance to the All-Star Race, he said he wasn’t. Haley revealed that he was there to have fun, and he had fun. Meanwhile, Micheal McDowell got somewhat of revenge during the race. But is the feud between him and Gibbs going to continue? Only time will tell.
