“Now we just need Dale’s ghost to join the team, and we have the ultimate NASCAR team,” NASCAR Twitter reacts to Jimmie Jonson’s plan to buy stakes at Petty GMS Racing
Jimmie Johnson and Richard Petty
Jimmie Johnson is reportedly planning to buy a small stake in Richard Petty’s Petty GMS Racing. If the purchase is successful, he will drive in selected races for the team in 2023. This is the first joint venture of the two NASCAR GOATs. The duo and Dale Earnhardt share the record for most cup championships with 7.
Richard Petty is the co-owner of Petty GMS Racing. He had to sell most of his stakes after the team neared bankruptcy. The team is currently represented on track by Erik Jones and Ty Dillon. Noah Gregson will replace the latter for 2023.
Jimmie Johnson, driving in the Indy series along with a few selected races after his cup retirement, announced his retirement from full-time racing a few months ago. The veteran is expected to be part of Hendrick Motorsports Le Man’s lineup for 2023. Johnson also has plans to race in some selected European races.
