“NASCAR got their payback, Hendrick just continues to cheat“- Fans react as NASCAR penalizes Hendrick Motorsports yet again for unsanctioned modifications
NASCAR has announced a penalty for the Richmond Race weekends, and HMS has again found itself on the wrong side.
Alex Bowman
Hendrick Motorsports should prepare for another trip to the appeal body on Wednesday as they are hit with the second serious penalty in three weeks. NASCAR imposed an L1 penalty on HMS’s most prominent performers of 2023, Alex Bowman and William Byron. All four team drivers were sanctioned three weeks ago for unsanctioned modifications hood lovers.
This penalty is also for unauthorized updates, this time in the greenhouse area. The officials identified the issues during the post-race inspection. Both drivers will lose 5 playoff points and 60 driver championship points. HMS will also be docked with similar points from the owners’ championship and playoffs. The interim crew chiefs of No:24 and No:48 are fined $75,000 each and will be suspended from two-point paying events starting April 13th.
HM violated the rule referenced in the NASCAR Rule Book 14.1.D Overall Assembled Vehicle Rules, 14.1.2.B Engineering Change Log, and 14.5.6.B: It states, “The greenhouse may be modified to accommodate a windshield wiper motor where required; these modifications will be permitted for all race tracks. The greenhouse modification must conform to certain guidelines.”.
The greenhouse is the top part of the Next-Gen car, including the roof, plus the front and rear glass. They can be modified to earn an aerodynamic edge. With the penalty they earned at Richmond, Bowman is now dropped to P7 from the top of the championship, while the two-race winner Byron is dropped to P14 from P4. Both were re-instated to their respective position after a point penalty drop after the apparel before the Richmond race.

Some fans used the opportunity to troll HMS for continuing to cheat even faster, getting caught.
