Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick expects to see his young prodigy William Byron winning the 2023 Cup titles this Sunday at Phoenix Raceway. Byron will go up against teammate Kyle Larson, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell, and Team Penske Racing’s Ryan Blaney on Sunday. It will mark Byron’s first final race as a contender.
He has the opportunity to win the title for the No:24 team for the first time since Jeff Gordon’s final triumph. Gordon will be baking his prodigy to return his car to its glory days. Byron had some impressive races this season and, with six wins, is the winningest racer in the series. He struggles a bit in the R-8 but hopes to return to his best starting from the qualifying on Saturday.
Hall of Fame team owner Rick Hendrick, while discussing a potential Cup triumph of William Byron, admitted that if the No:24 car can win the race, it will be super special for the driver. He explains it by highlighting how important the car and team legacy is for them. Hendrick also hinted that Jeff Gordon is rooting for Byron’s win.
With the 24, we won our first championship. That’s a number that everybody here is close to everybody’s heart. So, to see that car win again is super special…To see the No. 24 back in victory lane and winning a championship with William is gonna be special. I kinda know who Jeff Gordon is probably pulling for.

Rick Hendrick addressed the criticism when he gave Willaim Byron the No:24 seat
Byron’s NASCAR Cup series debut was huge. He replaced Chase Elliott in the No:24 car after the latter was moved to the No:9 car. Driving such a prestigious car and replacing a fan-favorite driver, the pressure on Byron to deliver was huge, and he has now confirmed with his recent performances that he deserves one of the most sought-after seats in NASCAR.
While explaining the evolution of Byron as a driver, Hendrick pointed out that there was a lot of criticism from outside the team over their driver selection, and seeing the results of their investment now makes him proud. Hendrick highlighted the smart and calculated driving style of Byron as well.
When I moved him into the No. 24, I had a lot of doubters. Not in our company, but I read all the stuff that people said he wasn’t ready. To see him blossom and turn into the driver he has, it’s been phenomenal. William has always been pretty calculating, and he doesn’t drive over his head, and he’s won races this year by making some aggressive moves.
