Team Penske Racing Ryan Blaney had a solid day on Sunday at Miami that saw him finish the race at P2 behind race winner Christopher Bell. If the race had a couple more laps left, the No:12 driver would’ve emerged victorious. He will go into the next event at Martinsville with a +10 points advantage and might need a solid top-10 finish to secure the final-four spot.
Blaney was livid on the team radio after the race with Bell’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin. The root cause of the anger was the aggressive tussle they had on the restart for the lead, with 38 laps left in the event. Hamlin’s aggressive move on Blaney cost both drivers their momentum and allowed the Bell to take the lead. Willaim Byron also got ahead of him.
The No:11 failed multiple slide jobs, ended up on the wall, and had to retire due to a mechanical failure. After the race, Blaney didn’t mince his word about his rival. The Ford driver called Hamlin a hack, referencing the Hamlin-Alex Bowman drama from 2020. Blaney believes the JGR driver used him up.
He tried to slide me two or three times and failed miserably. And then just decided to use me up. if you’re going to slide somebody, slide somebody and commit. Don’t halfway do it and use me up. What did he say? Hack. I think he was that today. Yeah.Blaney said, as reported by Sportsnaut.
Denny Hamlin races Ryan Blaney hard for the clean air
Talking about the Ryan Blaney clash after the race, Denny Hamlin admitted that he raced the Team Penske driver hard because he needed to have clean air. The only way to do that was to take the lead in the race, and the execution wasn’t up to the mark.
Whoever leads the race, that’s such a key moment because they have such a huge advantage. I had the bottom, and I took (the lead) on the bottom. If I didn’t get clear like I did in 2, I knew it would be tough to hold it. Unfortunately, we just got split.
While Blaney is in a comparatively good spot going into the R-8 elimination race at Martinsville, Hamlin is in a must-win situation. With the massive point advantage Byron is having, most probably, there is one place in the last four, and the best driver at Martinsville will win the event.
