Three times V8 Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen made history last Sunday in Chicago, where he scored his main NASCAR Cup series race win with Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91 Car. He was able to use his superior street course expertise to the fullest over a Cup grid, with most drivers making racecourse debut.
With the win, the Kiwi earned the respect of the Cup garage, and later he also expressed his wish to race in the series once his contract runs out with his current Supercar team Triple Eight in 2024. He will be free to move anywhere once his contract runs out at the end of 2024, but T8 team director Jamie Whincup is open to letting him go if an offer comes for him in 2024.
“I certainly wouldn’t stand in his way, no. Of course, there’s contractual things we need to work through but if someone really wants to go do something else, then I’m certainly not going to stand in his way, that’s for sure,” Whincup said.
van Gisbergen, during his Chicago post-race interview, already admitted that he might not be extending his contract once it runs out in 2023, saying he wants to explore NASCAR and Oval racing. Despite winning three wins this season, the veteran driver is not fond of the new Gen3 car’s performance as well. This is also believed to be a factor behind his pondering a move away from the championship.

Shane van Gisbergen is in love with the racing culture of the US
While talking about his experience in racing in the USA pointed out that it’s an experience he really likes. He pointed out that he finds racing in the US enjoyable and added that he also enjoys the media experience, which he doesn’t enjoy much in the Supercar racing scene.
“I miss racing in the States. I’ve done (the 24 Hours at) Daytona four or five times now, and just the way the American people are and how they go racing, it’s so much more enjoyable. And even doing the media stuff, which I hate, everyone here is really nice. They ask good questions, and they’re respectful, and it goes both ways,” SVG said.
He confirmed that he will race with T8 in 2024 before making possible decisions about his racing fans in 2024. He said, “I’m committed next year to Supercars. I still love Supercars and hope it goes well there. But in ’25, who knows?”
