The three-time Australian Supercars legend Shane van Gisbergen is ready for his next NASCAR Cup race and will return to the series on Sunday. He will compete in the 2.439-mile road course race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). Van Gisbergen will drive the No.91 Enhance Health-sponsored Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91 program. It is safe to say that all eyes will be focused on the Chicago race winner.

It has only been 42 days since Shane van Gisbergen won the Inaugural Chicago Street race in his NASCAR debut. Ever since his epic win, he has been the man of the moment in motorsports. The motorsports enthusiasts and drivers from other series congratulated him for winning NASCAR’s most prestigious Cup race in his first-ever start in the series. The New Zealand native claimed the NASCAR experience has been a dream come true.

Shane van Gisbergen spoke about his upcoming Indy race. He told the media, “We have got to come in and do our best, but you also have got to race with respect as well. These guys are fighting for their championship every week, so I have got to come in and stay out of trouble.” It is safe to say the 34-year-old respects the NASCAR drivers and hopes to race clean during his second outing at Indy.

Shane van Gisbergen says Indy will be different from Chicago

Van Gisbergen added, “It will certainly be different than the Chicago Street Course. I’ll need to get up to speed quickly, but we plan a lot of simulator time, and I know (No.91 Crew Chief) Darian Grubb will be thoroughly prepared for Indy.” The Kiwi believes in Justin Mark’s team and crew. He stated that he wanted to compete like how he did in Chicago.

Van Gisbergen wants to race hard while keeping in mind that other NASCAR drivers will be competing to secure a playoff spot. Only three races remain in the 2023 Cup Series regular season, and so he wants to race with respect. Shane van Gisbergen will join other Trackhouse drivers, Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez, at IMS. It’s going to be a big weekend for the Supercars champion.

However, Shane van Gisbergen won’t be the only new face at IMS. Fellow Supercars driver Brodie Kostecki will make his NASCAR Cup debut. Kamui Kobayashi, the two-time FIA World Endurance champion and 2021 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, and once a podium finished in F1 will also compete in the race. The 2009 F1 winner, Jenson Button, will also race alongside them.

Hence, it will be a real challenge for van Gisbergen. And not to mention, other Cup drivers will hunt for a win to secure the final spots in the playoffs. There is no doubt it is going to be an eventful race. The question is can Shane van Gisbergen make it 2/2?
