Sheldon Creed joined Richrd Childress Racing in 2022 to drive the No:2 Xfinity cars with the hopes of emulating the 2020 season where he won the Truck championship with GMS Racing. But, it turned out to be one of the worst decisions of his career as he failed to secure a single victory in his RCR days, while his teammate Austin Hill scored multiple wins.
He now has jumped shift and has joined their immediate championship rivals Joe Gibbs Racing of Toyota with title hopes. 2024 will mark his Toyota debut in NASCAR and first drive with the Japanese manufacturer since his K&N Pro Series days. While talking about his move to Joe Gibbs’s team he has addressed the winless streak.
He claimed that it was the RCR cars that cost him victories in the last two seasons and admitted that the days with the Chevcy team have been frustrating. Creed pointed out that despite him putting in all the work, the No:2 Chevy Camaro fielded for him held him back. In the last two seasons with RCR, Creed’s best finish was P2s he scored on seven different occasions.
I’ve been frustrated the last two years really just not running well and it just gets irritating, right? You feel like you’re putting in a lot of work and I felt like I was, I don’t know, I don’t want to say better than the car but it just felt like that was holding me back a lot of the time.Creed said, as reported by On3.com.
Sheldon Creed was ready to go back to the Truck Series
Creed admitted that due to the frustrating times he was having with RCR he was ready to go back to the Truck series just to start winning races again. The youngster’s frustration is valid considering has been a proven winner and the preferential treatment Austin Hill got at RCR was pretty evident.
I finally think that frustration got to me and I started talking to people and I was even considering going back truck racing at some point just cause I was overrunning how I was and I wanted to go win races again.
Joe Gibbs Racing is a good step forward for Creed considering the team’s legacy race wins are guaranteed if everything goes right. But it comes at a cost as well, as if he fails again to score wins, the move could affect his chance of making it to the Cup series.
