Supercars legend set to make NASCAR debut with Trackhouse: Reports

Shane Van Gisbergen

The NASCAR Cup Series championship will stage an inaugural street race in Chicago later this year. However, despite this fact, it has recently been reported that the Trackhouse Racing team has contacted the former 3-time Repco Supercars Championship winner, Shane van Gisbergen, to drive for them at the event.

Shane Van Gisbergen is a well-renowned name in the World of supercar racing, and if the report does prove to be true, then Gisbergen would be seen racing in the NASCAR Cup Series at the inaugural Chicago Street race. A team representative was asked to comment on the report, and he said, “Trackhouse Racing is not commenting on these reports at this time.”

While the representative has declined to comment on the matter, Trackhouse Racing’s co-owner, Justin Marks, last month revealed that there would be a new driver doing his thing in the number 91 Chevrolet Camaro later this year. There is a very good possibility that Marks here is talking about Shane Van Gisbergen.

Justin Marks, while talking about it at that time, said, “It’s going to be somebody that has got very, very different experience from NASCAR but in some ways is actually perfectly suited for a Cup race. This is somebody who has not raced in America very much at all, but I think is going to be able to go to this particular race and make some real noise. I’m excited about that.”

An official announcement is soon expected from Trackhouse Racing

The Trackhouse team created the PROJECT 91 program to bring the best talent from all over the globe. To build star-studded line-ups that would set the NASCAR Cup Series stage on fire. Moreover, continuing with its mission, the team had the former F1 World Champion, Kimi Raikkonen, racing for them in the number 91 Camaro at two events last year.

The Finnish driver was again seen driving at this year’s NASCAR Cup Series race at the Circuit of the Americas. Raikkonen managed a career-best 29th-place finish at the event. Now with the way the hype is building regarding Shane Van Gisbergen’s Cup Series debut, it is expected that an official announcement for both parties is not too far away.

In the world of NASCAR racing, Van Gisbergen is an unknown commodity, but considering that he is a former 3-time Supercars Champion, he will bring a unique set of skills to the Cup Series. However, the Supercars category is very different from NASCAR; taking this into account, would Van Gisbergen be able to compete in the competition against some of the stalwarts of the sport?
