A recent trend of Australian Supercar stars trying their luck out in the American stock car series has been witnessed in the past few years. Now following in the footsteps of Supercar stars Shane van Gisbergen and Brodie Kostecki, Cameron Waters will be participating in a NASCAR Truck series race at Martinsville. Waters is an Australian racer for Tickford Racing, who has finished runners-up twice in the in the Supercars series.
The Aussie has amassed more than 250 starts in the series and has triumphed close to a dozen times. Moreover, the 29-year-old is the youngest driver to have competed in the prestigious Bathrust 1000, claiming several podiums there along the years. With such great achievements under his belt, he has decided to expand his perspective far ahead and make his NASCAR debut at Martinsville with ThorSport Racing.
We’ve been working away at making this happen for some time and to finally be given the change to race, and with a top operation, is great. I’m not putting too much pressure on myself knowing I will be getting thrown into the deep end without any testing, but hopefully I can adapt reasonably quickly and be competitive. It’s a short oval so I’m sure it will be pretty wild out there.Cameron Waters said in a press release by the team.
The 29-year-old would be racing a Ford in the Truck series just like in the Supercar series. Moreover, the debutant is ready for the challenge ahead of him and would be wanting to excel like his compatriot, Shane van Gisbergen in the race.
Rod Nash claims Cam Waters exploration into NASCAR is a bonus for them
Waters has had quite a fair bit of success with his current aliiance with Tickford racing. However, with his current move to the American series, it could have soured the relationship between the owner-driver pairing. But to everyone’s surprise Rod Nash has approved of this decison of the Aussie.
Anything that can provide Cam[Waters] with further seat time is a bonus, said Nash. His foray into Sprint Car racing and now the NASCAR Truck event provides a fantastic way for Cam to stay sharp and further test his skills. The timing being in-between the AGP event and Taupo also works well for our team and we’re wishing Cam well and will be watching with huge interest.Rod Nash said in a press release by the team.
Nash was optimistic of the move made by his ace driver. Moreover, he reckoned that any opportunity for Water is immense as it will help the young gun to gain experience in the stock cars. The race at Martinsville is in a perfect slot for the Aussie which just lies in the break before the race at Taupo. Thus, his team have no objections with their driver not being available for a single weekend and wish him well for his endeavour in the American sphere.
