One of the biggest stereotype NASCAR has been working a longtime over the years to end is the perception that it’s a white-male dominated sport. The conservative nature of majority of it’s fans, some dark moments of it’s past and most of it’s public faces being white males is the reason why such claims exits.
But over the years NASCAR has did some commendable work to become more diverse on and off the track. African American racer Bubba Wallace being one of the biggest stars of the sport, and female racers Hailie Deegan and Toni Breidinger being the most followed racers online shows some big progress. Breidinger has recently asserted that though there some dominance of a group of people in the sport, the stereotype in no longer valid.
People see it as a very White, male-dominated sport, but there’s a lot more diversity in it. And it still needs a lot of work. But that’s the general population’s stereotype of the sport. For me, it’s what I like to use my social media for — to show there’s a new wave of drivers coming up who are much more diverse and love to share more on social media and behind-the-scenes stuff than some of the older drivers do.Breidinger told The Athletic.
She asserted that the general stereotype isn’t right because nowadays there is a lot of diversity on and off the track. The young generation that are coming up the ladder are from a diverse back-ground and they are using the platforms they have on social to media to share this message to the people.
Toni Breidinger addressed another big misconception people have about NASCAR drivers
Breidinger, while talking in the same interview, discussed another misconception people have about NASCAR. She claimed that casual fans often overlook the hard work drivers put-in behind the scenes and just assume that what they see on TV is what they do. She pointed out that there a lot of work the driver has to around racing and also has business commitments.
They just see us on TV, on the track and they don’t realize all the stuff that goes into it during the week. Sometimes people think we just show up, but there’s a lot of physical training during the week and even mental training. I work with a sports mental coach, I have sim training, notes, watch lots of footage. And also the business aspect, which is a whole new other world.Toni Breidinger said.
Toni Breidinger is one of the hardest working racers in the sport on and off the track. The huge sponsorship lineup she has shows how much she is working and in 2024. She would be hoping that the work she has done on her arcing would playoff and yield her a championship.
