2024 will be massive for Tony Stewart and his family. He and his wife Leah Pruett have decided to have a baby next year and finally start a family. To do that Pruett, who got married to the Stewart Haas Racing co-owner in November 2021, will step away from her NHRA seat and will take a year break.
Stewart will take over the seat of the team that he owns. He started the Tony Stewart Racing dragster team after the marriage and has been racing in the second tier of the drag racing series with his team, while his wife was having solid races in the top tier. But the promotion from Top Alcohol to Top Fuel is a massive jump, and it makes the NASCAR Hall of Famer the weak link in the team.
The decision to take over the seat wasn’t made by him and it was the crew chief of Pruett’s team that made the decision. Stewart, while talking about the new challenge, detailed his goals for the event. He pointed out that he plans to have some good events and not embrace himself in drag racing’s premier division.
My goal is to not suck, to not get fired by my wife, and to not kill myself driving this thing.
Matching his wife in the dragster will be a big challenge for Stewart. She had the best season of her 14-year career in 2023 which saw her finish P2 in the championship with two wins. But he has all the resources to be successful and having his wife as the coach will do a lot of good. Having the 2023 NHRA Funny Car champion Matt Hagan as the teammate will be good for him as well.
Tony Stewart reveals Leah Pruett decided to take a break in 2024
The decision to take a break from racing, something she has worked her whole career, will be hard for Leah Pruett. It is something a male Stewart can never fully comprehend; hence he is fully supportive of whatever Leah wants to do.
He pointed out that it was Leah Pruett who decided to take the break in 2024 despite having the opportunity to do it in later years. The couple sees it as the best time to have the child and the couple is ready for the responsibility that comes with it.
We had discussed starting a family and this was her decision. In those discussions, we came to the conclusion that the timing was up to her. I was very supportive as to whether she wanted to do it now or years from now.
