The Next-Gen era has been brutal on Ford team Stewart Haas Racing. They have secured just three wins since the 2022 season and was winless last season. Their current form shows no signs of a fast recovery. The lack of a strong leadership, losing major sponsorship deals after Kevin Harvick and Aric Almirola’s retirement has put them in a harsh situation.
Now latest reports from the Sports Business Journal suggests that Tony Stewart and Gene Haas’s team is all set to scale down as soon as next-season. It’s been reported that they would be selling two of their charters and would be offloading two of it’s drivers. It might also help the team to extend their contract with Ford as their current partnership in ending at the end of the season.
By selling charters, Stewart Haas Racing can secure enough funds to make their team better. The most recent charter sale, done by BJ McLeod earned him around $40 million. SHR can at least earn around $50 million from the sales as they doesn’t have the same advantage BJ had in the market due to their desperate situation.
There is enough demand in the market for the sale of charters. Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin’s 23XI Racing has shown interest in expanding their operation multiple times. Trackhouse Racing, Spire Motorsports and Legacy MC are also in the market actively looking for a new charter to add to their garage.
Here is how fans on X reacted to the reports
NASCAR fans on X had a mixed reaction to the announcement and were quick to share the opinion. Some called out co-owner and legendary racer Tony Stewart over lack of passion shown from his side and insisted that he no-longer care for the sport. There were a lot of criticism coming to the way of Gene Haas as well.
Some fans put the blame on driver Ryan Preece which seems bit farfetched. Though he is the worst performing SHR racer right now, his poor form is predominantly due the machinery SHR field for him being not competitive.
Some fans also gave the prediction about what could happen next if the sales plan get the green light. They urged Dale Earnhardt Jr. to use this as an opportunity to make the Earnhardt brands’ Cup return. Few also predicted Trackhosue and 23XI to buy the two charters.

Tony has moved on. With Nascar changing the game every week, now not calling out foul on restarts—Sell, let sponsors find other sports that is more stable.

Briscoe moves to RFK Preece to Front Row
No surprise as @StewartHaasRcng has lost significant backing with the retirements of Harvick and Amilrola.

SHR Is currently in a tough situation and downscaling is the right way for the team to move forward. They should off-load most of the resources that are not the top-2 for the team and focus entirely on fielding championship winning cars like they used to. Once they get’s back on track in the future, they can once again expand to a four-car team.
