NASCAR has named Bobby Labonte on the list of 75 greatest drivers. He joins his brother, Hall of Famer, and Cup legend Terry Labonte on the list. Terry was among the first 50 drivers named in 1998.
Labonte started his career driving midgets before establishing himself as a competitive force in the late model series. On the way to the top of NASCAR, he also played a huge part in building race-winning cars for Terry Labonte. He made his NASCAR debut in Xfinity Series with the family-owned team in 1982. He won the Series with the team in 1991 and made his Cup series debut the same year.
In 1993 he got his full-time Cup ride with Bill Davis Racing, and after two years, he was signed by Joe Gibbs Racing, where he went on to score his maiden win in the Cup. After finishing second in the 1999 championship run, he won the Cup championship in 2000, scoring four wins that season for JGR Pontiac. He retired from the series in 2016, racing for 15 different teams and six different manufacturers.
The 2001 IROC champion is also the oldest driver to score a win in the Tony Stewarts SRX Racing series, aged 55. He scored 21 Cup race wins, including two Crown Jewell Race wins in 2000. From 729 Cup race starts, he scored 203 Top 10s and 26 poles. In the Xfinity series, he has ten wins and 103 top 10s from 2023 starts. Labonte has one win in the Truck series from 10 starts and has scored five top 5s.
