Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell has finally secured the win he has been chasing the whole season. The No:20 driver held off fellow TRD teammate Tyler Reddick in the final laps to win the race under caution. Bell, one of the most skillful dirt racers in the Cup garage, was expected to win the race from the get-go, and with Kyle Larson’s early exit, he had more odds in his favor.
Bell, who led the 100 laps of the race, survived multiple incidents involving clashes and spins. The change in the track surface during the race forced drivers to look for lanes where they could extract the maximum from the car. This multi-lane tussle and the lack of experience from some Cup drivers in the dirt produced chaos.
The No:20 team’s decision to stay out of the pits ahead of the third stage played a big part in his victory as it allowed him to create a decent gap between him and the rest of the field. Tyler Reddick had a shot at catching up with him in the final laps, but the caution flag coming out at the end stripped him of the opportunity.
Bell, in his post-race interview, pointed out that he had one of the longest races of his career at Bristol, and the whole race has been a fun ride. He added that regardless of the type of track surface driving, there is always fun. The easter Sunday winner added that the 20 seconds laps were tough and that corners 3 and 4 were really tight challenges for him.
“Man, let me tell you, these are some of the longest laps of my entire life. This place is so much fun, whether it is dirt or concrete. Whenever the cushion got up there on the top, it was very tough because you couldn’t drive it super hard otherwise you’d get sucked in. If you got your right front into it, you’d push a little bit. If you got your right rear into it, you’d slide. It was a lot of fun. I’m so grateful to be here driving this No. 20,” Bell said.
