The NASCAR Cup series line-up for the COTA race has made it one of the most anticipated races of the season and potentially the most awaited road course race over the years. It will mark the NASCAR debut of 2009 F1 World Champion Jenson Button and 4 times IMSA world champion Jordan Taylor. 2007 F1 champion Kimi Raikkonen will make his second Cup start at COTA as well.

According to the NASCAR Roster Portal, seven times Cup champion Jimmie Johnson will make his second cup entry at COTA. He will drive the No:84 Chevy of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, the team he co-owns with Richard Petty. Johnson made his re-debut at the Daytona 500 and produced a respected performance.

Jenson Button and Jordan Tylor are directly eligible to start the race. Tylor is replacing injured Chase Elliott in the No:9 HMS car, while Button’s No:15 Rick Ware Racing car is also full-time charter. In the case of Kimi Raikkonen, who will drive the Trackhouse Racing No:91 Chevy, and Jimmie Johnson, they are open car entries and has to qualify. They are joined by IndyCar driver Conor Daily who will drive for Money Team Racing.

The race will mark the Circuit of American debut of the record champion, as he has never driven at the Texas track in his Cup career. Johnson is not the dominant Road Course racer, he has won just one Cup race in his 40 Road course race starts. His win came in Sonoma in 2014. He has 6 top 5 finishes and 9 top 10s in road course races. Johnson has two cup poles in such tacks, both coming in Watkins Glen. In the 2018 laps, he ran in such tracks, he led 151 laps.

Fans were ecstatic after learning about a potential Jimmie Johnson debut. They quickly shared their thoughts on the entry, and some even predicted a race-win fight among the champions. Some fans requoted more F1 drivers, such as Sebastian Vettel’s entry into the sport.
