NASCAR Cup Series team LEGACY MOTOR CLUB has announced they will start fielding Toyota Camry from the 2024 season. The re-branded Petty GMS Racing has signed a deal with TRD, making them one of the three teams fielding the Japanese manufactured cars. The other two teams in the series are Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI Racing.
One of the biggest surprises for the NASCAR community is that two Chevy legends who co-own the team allowed the move. Richard Petty remained as the co-owner of the team since Maury Gallagher’s takeover. Jimmie Johnson joined him towards the end of the 2022 season. Both drivers are seven times Cup champions, and all the accolades Johnson won in his career came with Chevy.
Since Jimmie Johnson’s arrival, the team has undergone big changes. He was given the decision-making power in the team on the marketing and business aspects, and he quickly showed his expertise in landing solid sponsorship deals. He also performed impressively in his part-time outings in the Cup with the team. Toyota moves his biggest and most ambitious decisions of all he has done for the team.
“Maury Gallagher and I are excited about the partnership with Toyota and TRD beginning in 2024. We admire and respect the level at which Toyota conducts their business in this sport and look forward to forging a new legacy for the future. I will always be appreciative to Chevrolet and everything we have accomplished together. … history books will forever memorialize our record-breaking success we shared,” Johnson said about the Toyota move.
“Jimmie Johnson and Maury Gallagher have impressed us with their long-term vision and commitment to building a championship-caliber organization. More importantly, their character and values are aligned with ours and our current Cup Series partners, Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI Racing. Of course, we also look forward to reuniting with our old friends, Erik Jones and Noah Gragson,” TRD USA President David Wilson said about the move.

Here is how fans reacted to LEGACY MC’s TRD move
The NASCAR community online had a mixed reaction to the move. Some fans are sad that they support Johnson for his brave move from the Chevy umbrella and wish to best of luck with Toyota. While some fans, on the other hand, were pretty upset about the move as they deemed Johnson and Petty choosing something outside of Chevy hinders their legacy.
