This Sunday’s race in Phoenix showcased the dominance of the Toyotas. Christopher Bell claimed victory in a hot pursuit between his teammates. However, JGR driver, Ty Gibbs was also the star of the weekend as he claimed a third-place finish inching ever closer to his maiden cup victory. It was the best-ever finish of his Cup career.
The Toyotas were the benchmark on the race day with five of its drivers leading 50 or more odd laps in the desert heat in Arizona. The race was panning out in favour of the 21-year-old Gibbs, but he was stopped in his way due to the pitstop mishaps and the drama that went on during the race. Regardless, Gibbs recovered back to P3 and achieved his career-best finish at Phoenix.
Yeah, I think everybody at JGR (Joe Gibbs Racing) and Toyota with this new car, they just did a great job. We’re happy with it, but we need to get a little bit better to go out here and hopefully go and win. It’s definitely a positive from the last two Phoenix races for me.Ty Gibbs told Frontstech.
Gibbs was envisaging his maiden win and was convinced that it was just around the corner. Due to his recent spike in performances, the 2021 Xfinity Series champion is optimistic about his chances. Moreover, fans worldwide would be keeping an eye out for the young gun. Gibbs would be expecting to taste the sweet victory in Bristol next week following his successful weekend in Phoenix.
Ty Gibbs’s verdict on how his race panned out in Phoenix
Gibbs joined the NASCAR Cup Series last year and had an abomination of a race in Phoenix last time around. Previously, the 21-year-old had finished 21st at the 1-mile-long racetrack. However, things panned out to be a lot different this time around. After the race, Gibbs gave his opinion on why this year’s race was a better affair for him.
I felt really good early in the run but just in that middle section, we just struggled really bad. But we got it figured out and we had a great strategy call by my crew chief. We just got to get a little bit better, but we kind of know where we need to get better at.Ty Gibbs said as reported by NASCAR
The JGR driver elaborated that he was comfortable in the first and last parts of the track but faced difficulty in acing the middle section. However, the team was able to find a path around the problem and engaged themselves in a strategic battle which paid dividends in the end.
Despite his recovery drive in Phoenix, the North Carolina native would be looking for more in Bristol. The 21-year-old has amassed two top-fives and three top-10s and can bid a challenge for the title with his current form.
