Ty Gibbs has once again proved why he is the ‘entitled problem child’ of NASCAR. The JGR driver, who drives for his Grandfather Joe Gibbs, wrecked his teammate Brandon Jones in the last lap of the Martinsville Xfinity playoff race for the win. The crash knocked Jones out of Championship 4, as he was in a must-win situation.

It wasn’t the first time the duo wrecked each other at the track. But Gibbs should have done better, as he was already in the final four. The irrational move from the No:54 driver cost JGR a playoff spot while their rivals, JRM, benefitted from it. The NASCAR community quickly called out Ty Gibbs and demanded that NASCAR suspend him, which the organization refused.

JGR vice-Chairman and ty Gibbs’s father, Coy Gibbs, when asked about the incident, acknowledged that it was disappointing. Though he appreciates his son’s aggression, he wants him to pull back when the time demands it. He said, “Yesterday was disappointing… I appreciate his aggression, but sometimes you got to pull back a little bit. This is a place where we need to pull back some,”.

Coy Gibbs plans to educate his son on the cations as it has precautions beyond the team. He said, “Just talk to him and explain to him that doing that affects not just him, it affects our whole company, all our sponsors, all the people we deal with, Toyota, obviously affected Brandon… hopefully, we can get with him and educate him on those things,”.

Joe Gibbs said that the incident occurred during the heat of the battle among their teammates. He said,  “Yeah, I think being aware of the circumstances is one thing. But there are other things there, too. It was something that was the heat of the battle. Everything is taking place. There was so much going on,”.

Joe Gibbs said he could have handled the situation better. He said, “I feel like I could have handled it better. I think that’s it. All of us certainly wish that it had never happened. We think the world of Brandon and his dad, J.R., so we’re just kind of committed to at this point go through all of this and try and do it in the right way.”

Joe Gibbs is finding it hard to walk through all this as a grandfather from a racing family. He said, “I think everybody out there that’s got kids and grandkids know the feelings, so that’s all part of it. Sometimes that’s not easy to walk through all that, but I think it’s just something we have to – as a family and as a race team family,”.

Do you think JGR should penalize Ty Gibbs?
