Daytona International Speedway is infamous for hosting some of the most chaotic NASCAR races of all time and the 2024 season openers lived up to its name. The Truck Series season openers was a wreck fest that saw the race ending under caution and the fans witnessed nearly a carbon copy of the incident in the ARCA season opener.
The race was chaotic from the beginning. In just four laps drivers such as Toni Breidinger and Shane van Gisbergen were collected in a multi-car crash. Then with 18 laps to go pole sitter Willie Mullins was involved in an incident. The race was sent to overtime following the late crash of Marco Andretti.
On the last lap, Venturini Motorsports drivers Gus Dean and Jake Finch, who led the majority of the race lined up together. Contrary to the previous restart, they decided not to do a teammate restart. This decision proved decisive as Andy Jankowiak who re-started behind Finch pushed the young driver too much causing the mega wreck, while Dean drove off and secured the win.
Jake Finch’s car made contact with the outside wall and multiple cars on the outside lane were collected in the chaos as most cars ran close because of the restart. Andres Perez. who was driving alongside the leading group was collected as well and he ended up on top of Jankowiak’s car, which started all the mess.
Here is how fans reacted to the ARCA chaos
The NASCAR fans coming into the knew that there would be chaos, but didn’t expect it to be such a disaster. They were disappointed and took it to X to share their views. They bashed the drivers for their incompetence and even branded some as spoiled rich kids.
The last lap of the race might have stained, what was a milestone moment for the team and an emotional one for the drivers. For Gus Dean, the win meant everything as he dedicated the win to his grandfather while for Venturini it was their 100th race win.
