The 2023 NASCAR Truck Series finale was one of the worst events ever in the sport’s history. The third-tier championship drivers’ easily avoidable crashes and over-aggressive racing style disappointed the whole racing community. Now ex-NASCAR champion and team owner Tony Stewart has come forth criticizing how the champion celebrated the triumph after all the mess.
Ben Rhodes was able to bag his second Truck title after he survived the chaos predominantly created by Corey Heim and Carson Hocevar. The two young drivers shared multiple blows throughout the night, and Heim allegedly taking revenge on Hocevar towards the end of the race marked the end of what could’ve been a remarkable championship race.
Rhodes, who became the champion after finishing ahead of fellow championship-4 contenders, celebrated the win without restrictions. When he came to meet the media for the interview, he was under the influence of alcohol and produced some hilarious moments, which Tony Stewart describes as ‘stupid stuff.’ Stewart was clearly disappointed by the actions of Rhodes, who is a senior racer.
It was even equally as embarrassing to watch the champion Doing media interviews at the end of it. And, yeah, you want to celebrate with your team but have enough composure to get through your media interviews and then go back to your team. And if you want to get blitzed and do stupid stuff, that's totally fine.Tony Stewart said via Hot Rod Pod.
Tony Stewart insists that young racers should care about what they are doing
While talking further about the reigning Truck champion’s actions, Stewart claimed that he was concerned that Rhodes might lose his sponsors for 2024 because of how he presented himself before the media. Stewart also acknowledged that Rhodes deserved to be the champion.
But I'm watching the kid do his post-race media session, and I'm like, oh, my God. I mean, you hope his sponsors stay there for next year because the kid did a great job. I mean, he earned a championship. He deserved it.
Stewart later discussed the mentality of the current generation of NASCAR racers. He believes they don’t think or care about anything they are doing when they should. He also discussed the poor racing etiquette of racers of this generation on the podcast.
But it just shows the mentality of some of these younger guys of, like, they don't think about everything, or they don't care about it. Like they need to care about it because everybody's watching.
