Seven times NASCAR Cup series champion Jimmie Johnson joined LEGACY MOTOR CLUB as co-owner and part-time driver in 2022. But his return to the Cup series after the two-year IndyCar car stint hasn’t been fruitful. The team has struggled to field competitive cars for him and his two full-time drivers.
Amidst the struggles, LEGACY MC announced they would join Toyota in 2024 and will be fielding Camry from next season. It was a shocker for many in the Cup garage as Johnson and his co-owner Richard Petty secured victories in their glory days with Chevy. Fans were also eager to know if JJ would drive a Camry in 2024. Toyota has now confirmed that he will.
Toyota Racing Development President David Wilson said that the Hendrick Motorsports legend will drive the Toyota Camry before he ends his career as a race car driver. He said having the champion driver driving a Toyota in the Cup series is very moving for him, personally and professionally.
“Yes, you will see him in a Toyota (in 2024), and that is something that will be very moving and emotional for me personally, professionally, for Toyota. I’ll let Jimmie fill in the blank, but I will just say that Jimmie Johnson will be racing a Toyota Camry before he is done as a racecar driver,” Wilson said.

Toyota admits that they got a lot of work to do to make LEGACY MC a contender
David Wilson pointed out that there is a lot of work ahead of them to make LEGACY MC a competitive team, as they are still in their infancy. He added that having Jimmie Johnson as a partner was the main reason for Toyota’s decision to sign him and said the champion is a quality human being. Though it will take time, Wilson hopes to improve the teams with Toyota.
“Legacy Motor Club is really in its infancy. They’re struggling big time right now, but I’ll be very candid at saying the singular element that convinced me that this was a no-brainer was seven-time champion, Jimmie. I’ve gotten to know Jimmie over the past year and realized just what a quality human being he is and what a great fit he will be to Toyota’s culture,” Wilson said on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio
“Jimmie and his partner Maury have sold us on their commitment to invest in that team and bring the resources and people they need to run at the front. That takes time. We’re going to help them with that. I think overall they will contribute to our overall presence at the top level of NASCAR,” Wilson added.
