Bubba Wallace, the sole full-time black driver in NASCAR Cup Series, has been having a roller-coaster of a ride in 2022 as bad luck and mistakes overshadowed the improvement and track heroics shown by the  23X1 Racing driver. Bubba Wallace started 2022 on a high note finishing P2 in the Daytona 500 but he had to wait for 11 rounds of racing to score another 2 weeks before at Kansas, where his Kurt Busch secured the win.

The 2021 Talladega Cup Race winner had his own mistakes costing him wins at the same time the ongoing pit-crew misshapes by the 23X1 crew which has also put him in trouble. The most embarrassing situation for the crew came in Kansas where Wallace had two pit-lane penalties which cost him a sure podium finish in Kansas.

Bubba Wallace has recently called out his team before the Texas All-Star race saying “I messed up a lot of races, but the opportunity to come back out and compete again gives you that second chance. Grow from that. Learn from that. I told them I’m not sorry for what I said. I said it. It’s out there. It is what it is. I call it how I see it. We sucked that day,”.

Bubba Wallace acknowledged his crew took the criticism really well saying he asked the crew members how they really feel about the criticizing them on the pit-stop trouble to which they replied and Bubba Wallace quoted ‘Man, we’re just trying to get through it,’. He went on to say that that’s when they entered into a long discussion about the issue at hand.

They took it very well. I said, ‘How do you guys feel?’ ‘Ah, we’re good.’ I said, ‘That’s bulls***. Tell me how you really feel.’ He’s like, ‘Man, we’re just trying to get through it.’ And that’s when we went into that long discussion,” Bubba Wallace said.

He went on to say that he told them the biggest thing they have is having each other’s back which he failed to do by calling them out. He went on to say his words might have pissed some people but added that he got to where he is now by hearing things worst than this and learning from it. He went on to say his crew most of whom are from football backgrounds acknowledged that they are not really bothered by his words.

I told them that the biggest thing that we can have is each other’s backs. Calling them out is really not having their backs, but as I said, I call it how I see it. Pisses some people off. You know, I’ve been called worse and I learn from that and it makes me stronger. All these guys have come from the football ranks. What I said is just like a drop in the bucket. And they said that too – ‘it really doesn’t bother us,” Bubba Wallace said.
