“Spends all their time pushing Bubba Wallace down our throats”- Fans react to Kenny Wallace backing Danica Patrick’s no star power in NASCAR claims
In recent years, F1 has experienced a notable surge in American interest.

Danica Patrick, the former NASCAR driver, recently shook the NASCAR world with her outspoken remarks regarding the sport’s decline in popularity. Her comments addressed the excessive length of NASCAR races and the shifting landscape of driver recognition, which have contributed to a downturn in viewership.
Speaking to Awful Announcing in an interview, she said that the drop in Star Power and the marketability of drivers is the reason why F1 is growing in the US. Her view was met with a lot of positive reception from the fans. And recently, Kenny Wallace, former race car driver and reporter for Fox, has supported her claim as well.
Replying to her words in the interview, Kenny took to his X account to tweet about the stark differences between current-generation NASCAR drivers and the drivers of the past. He wrote:
Todays NASCAR drivers can walk down the street and nobody knows who they are, that was not true in the late 1990’s or early 2000’s. Rusty Wallace and Dale, Earnhardt Sr could not go anywhere and actually needed police to guard them at times.
Adding weight to their claims is the remarkable growth of F1 in the United States. This sport has experienced a significant surge in popularity, now featuring three races in one year. The Netflix series “Drive to Survive” has been instrumental in growing its American fanbase. This resurgence has spurred discussions about what NASCAR may have lost along the way.
Fans claim that today’s NASCAR drivers are more about money than talent
Fans, too, have sung the same song along with Danica and Wallace. They lamented the perceived decline of NASCAR’s current era. They yearn for the “good ole days” when drivers were celebrated as the nation’s top talents. Fans have drawn sharp comparisons between today’s drivers’ marketability and the stars of the past. They’ve criticized NASCAR for what they view as inadequate promotion and marketing.
Many conservative NASCAR enthusiasts argue that the sport’s inclusive culture negatively impacts its appeal. They contend that NASCAR’s efforts to diversify have backfired. One fan went as far as stating, “NASCAR spends all their time pushing Bubba Wallace down our throats. It’s disgusting.” The prevailing sentiment among these fans is that today’s NASCAR drivers are valued more for their financial backing than their racing talent.

I can remember when drivers hung around after the race to interact with the fans whereas now they're on the plane heading back to Charlotte as quickly as possible. I know when I met Richard Petty after the 1968 fall race at Martinsville he was there for at least 2 after the race…

Exactly!!! SHE knows nothing !! She's just saying that bc SHE didn't get recognized walking down the street lol

Loved NASCAR 10-15+ years ago. Today, I agree with @DanicaPatrick that I could walk right past any driver and not know who they were. Racing's boring, driver/actors are boring, the lifestyle that used to be is now boring. No fun, just woke bs.

Do not tell a soul that @DanicaPatrick and I agree
— Mike ⚓ Hawk (@Voted4Trump420) October 27, 2023
I blame them letting in so many drivers end whose last name starts with 'b'. I can keep track of them anymore. b for bland.
— Scott (@scott_gc) October 27, 2023
Also because NASCAR let drivers have personalities back then. Today they are as cookie cutter and bland as nextgen car. Minus a few that are starting to age out.

And I think it is because now days, you must be a millionaire to get a ride. It’s not based off talent. It’s all about the green now days. https://t.co/zFgTcG66x5

I have 2 questions Kenny
— Johnny Cornwell (@johnny_iceman) October 27, 2023
1- Does Danica have the experience to be taken seriously in these conversations ?
2- Do you believe nascar is bringing drivers to cup level too soon and too young ?
I ask because seems like back in the day, you really had to earn that cup ride more
This is bc the drivers lack personality or aren’t allowed to show a real personality.

This isn’t hard. https://t.co/48cMjlfP3E
Ask someone to name 3 Nascar drivers there's a very good chance they're going to say Jeff Gordon, Dale Jr. and Jimmie Johnson; not William Bryon, Christopher Bell and Tyler Reddick
— Fifth Gear (@FifthGear10) October 27, 2023
like I'm sure they're all very fun personalities but people needs to see it more
Jeff Gordon hosted SNL. I can't imagine that happening today.
— PJ Walsh (@PJWalsh24) October 27, 2023
Noah Gragson be that next bigger than life star.
— diehardt (@diehardt8838) October 27, 2023
Most of today's drivers look like they should be car pooling to a 12U baseball game
— Tommy (@saltybeachnc) October 27, 2023
It isn’t the best drivers it’s who’s dad can write the biggest check
— Doug (@Doug86007296) October 27, 2023
I’ve been saying that for several years. NASCAR is not promoting its stars. As a kid you couldn’t walk in a store without finding merch for the top 5-10 guys, tv appearances etc. it seems it went hand in hand with Winston leaving

Amid this debate, Danica Patrick and Kenny Wallace’s voices have sparked a significant conversation about the state of NASCAR today. While change is a constant, it’s clear that the sport’s dedicated followers long for the days when drivers’ names echoed through the grandstands and NASCAR’s star power was blindingly bright.
