Penske breaks silence on NASCAR wheel saga following rookie Austin Cindric win in Daytona 500

NASCAR on Friday morning after the Thursday duels confiscated the wheels used of Team Penske and Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing at Daytona which was be brought to the NASCAR Research & Development Center for further inspection and probability of a potential penalty.
Following the seize of wheels for alleged modifications, the team had to use tires from their shop in Sunday 500 where Penske’s rookie Austin Cindric got them the victory. Now for the first time after the incident the team has publicly responded to the claims as their owner Roger Penske came out denying any wrongdoing from the team.

Roger Penske said that they were in contact with NASCAR one week before Daytona about the inconsistency n the wheel the are getting which they believed needed modification on the drive pin holes. He went on to say the team went on with the plan in the absence feedback from NASCAR adding they did the modification without any coverup. Roger Penske added that the wheels that were used in Sunday was same as the rest of the grid’s.
“We had contacted NASCAR a week before and said that the wheels we were getting were not all the same and we felt we needed to modify the holes where the drive pins go in,” Roger Penske said.
“We didn’t really get any feedback, and at that point, we went ahead and opened the holes up. I just think there was so much going on and trying to get the communication back and forth — we certainly talked about it with them,” Roger Penske added.
“This wasn’t something we did under the covers trying to beat anybody. It was right there. So, they took all our wheels, and we ran [Sunday] with wheels that we had up at the shop [that] came down. They were certainly like everybody else’s,” Roger Penske explained.
