Hendrick Motorsport won their maiden championship in the Next-Gen era, thanks to Kyle Larson who took advantage of Denny Hamlin’s misfortune in final overtime. He wasn’t even in contention before the final caution, as the No:5 team won the championship without leading a single lap of the season finale.

Talking about the triumph with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Hall of Fame team owner Rick Hendrick was really emotional. He pointed out that it was an unbelievable day for the team and admitted that it was the most nerve-wrecking championship-4 race he has ever been in. At the same time, he also shared his sympathy for both Denny Hamlin and William Byron over the caution that changed the whole race.

You know, they never give up and work hard together. It was an unbelievable day, and this is probably the most nerve-wrecking race in being a Championship with ups and downs and blown tires. You have to feel bad for Denny because he ran a heck of a race, his car was lights out and I feel bad for William because he had a problem at the end.

Rick Hendrick said via SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Further talking about the point, he asserted that it was unbelievable that Kyle Larson secured the championship taking advantage of the drama and admitted that he kind of gave up the hope on winning the championship, towards the end of the race. The win for the No:5 Chevy team came from out of nowhere.

But you know when cars fall your way, and there’s caution, Larson got a shot man, it is unbelievable. I don’t think I’ve ever been excited in all 15 as I was cause I wasn’t expecting, I thought it was over and then all of a sudden, here we were and man I think I was going nuts.

Rick Hendrick added.

Kyle Larson is speechless about the championship triumph

Talking about his championship on his post-race interview, Kyle Larson was more emotional than his boss. He admitted that winning the title with an average car on the finale was unbelievable and admitted that they got lucky at the end with the caution.

I mean, really, I’m just speechless. I can’t believe it. We had an average car at best. We had the right front go down, lost a lap. Got saved by the caution. Did the wave-around. Was really bad that run. We took two tires. I was like, Oh, God, here we go. We’re going to go to the back now.

Kyle Larson said.

The mistake No:5 team made early in the race during the restarts helped them a lot as well, as they were able to execute the final restart better than Denny Hamlin, who had the tire advantage. He confidently claimed that he would have still won if the race went to double overtime.

It had a lot more grip than I anticipated. We got lucky with the final caution. I was really hoping we were going to take two again. I felt like I learned a lot on that restart, bombing one and two really hard. Thought I could do the same thing if we got another one.

Kyle Larson added.

The comments from the two times Cup Series champion shows he understands he was lucky to win the race and he earned the luck with his strong run in the race. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star racer in the remaining races of the season.
