Defending NASCAR Cup series champion Ryan Blaney of Team Penske Racing is going through one of the worst patches of his career. He started the season strong and was the most consistent Ford driver, till the first ten races of the season got over. Since then, has been in a downward spiral, that included two back-to-back DNFs.
His nightmare didn’t stop there and it went from bad to worse this week at Gateway. He was close to redeeming himself by winning the race on Sunday, but just before he took the white flag, the car started to slow down and eventually resulted in him getting overtaken by teammate Austin Cindric who went on to secure the win.
Ryan Blaney said they didn't know they were close to being short on fuel where he would have needed to save gas. He's bummed obviously after another punch in the gut this year. pic.twitter.com/H6BqKPLUw5

Ryan Blaney ended up P24 in the race because of the fuel issue and was heartbroken getting out of the car. He admitted that it really stinks to end the day a lap short of victory, despite having such a strong a day. Blaney pointed out that luck hasn’t been on his side over the last few weeks because of the crashes.
One lap short. It just stinks, but congrats to the 2 team. They did a good job all day. Props to them. …Really happy with our showing today. I don’t know what I got to do to get some luck on our side. Wrecked the last two points races and I thought we had a great shot to win today and ended up bad.Ryan Blaney told Fox Sports.
Ryan Blaney is proud of his team despite the result
The 2023 Cup champion isn’t fully disappointed because of the loss as he understands if not for the minor mis-calculation of fuel load, they would have been the winners. He pointed out that they will figure out what went wrong and will bounce back.
Hopefully, it straightens itself out just proud of the effort have to figure out what happened there if we thought we had more fuel than we did. It’s not like we left it short on purpose, just thought we had more. So, we’ll have to figure it out, dig into that, but proud of all of Team Penske today.Ryan Blaney said.
Blaney is also happy to see the win going to his teammate Cindric over some other drivers as it would’ve hurted more. The Team Penske garage will be hoping to build on the win to help Blaney and Logano get much needed wins.
