Superspeedway racing in NASCAR is defined by big wrecks, especially in the final laps of the races. But contrary to the usual trend the first two races of the 2024 season, the Daytona 500 and Atlanta Cup race, didn’t see that major crash. Now the reigning Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney has detailed the reason’s for the trend.
He pointed out that, in the evolved Next-Gen car era, it is hard to come back to the top due to the lack of third lane and it has reduced the chances of wrecks. Ryan Blaney pointed out that in the past it was possible for even driver at P20 to use the wrecks to his advantage and secure a better finish, now it is no longer possible.
I feel like it’s harder to make your way up from the back to the front, and just because of the lack of the third lane, we haven’t seen those big wrecks. As before, you come five to go, you could be 20th, alright there might be a big wreck, so you kind of wiggle your way up through there, but now you gotta be in those first three rows.Ryan Blaney said via MRN.
The No:12 Ford driver is one of the best Superspeedway racers in the current grid and his resume shows, that his words about the racing issue can’t be overlooked. Crashes and wrecks are a big part of the entertainment this style of racing produces. Whie having clean races at Superspeedways are good, missing the distinctive factor of risk that makes this race unique isn’t good for the sport.
Ryan Blaney details how the front row is dictating results now
The Ford driver asserted that, compared to the past, the top-3 drivers upfront has the reigns of the race. He claimed that the racers at P4 and below can’t influence the races as they used to do, other than just shoving and bumping.
If you’re fourth, fifth or back row, you’re not really doing anything. You can shove all you want, that would be just stacking everybody up. So the first three cars kind of do something, so that really where you want to be and just then it depends on your situation.Ryan Blaney said.
While he is concerned about the Superspeedway racing, his amin focus remains on ending his winless streak, as well as Ford winless streak. He is determined to end the run soon, secure a win and a playoff spot, which would put him in a favourable position to defend his Cup title.
