The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series calendar caused controversy when the sport decided to remove Auto Club Speedway and the LA Coliseum. The two Southern Californian tracks were fan favorites, who waited for these two races. Now, 2023 Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney has shared his views on the next rumored destination for the sport.

In recent weeks, rumors have surfaced that NASCAR could be considering a race in San Diego. This potential race would be held on a street circuit, similar to the Chicago weekend. Another street race could add excitement to the calendar, giving fans some good on-track battles. Though, the sport is yet to officially confirm such decisions just yet.

Ryan Blaney was open to the idea of San Diego’s addition to the Cup Series. Though, he was cautious over whether this will actually happen. The Team Penske star was not worried about another potential street track in the championship. Rather, Blaney pointed out that NASCAR has managed to pull off some incredible weekends at such circuits, further expanding its market potential.

We’ll see if it does happen or not. But, yeah, I think that’s fine. I mean, I think they’ve proven that they can go to these street races and build racetracks and put on great shows. I think it’s a good market for us out there.

Ryan Blaney said on Team Blaney podcast.

The No. 12 driver’s comments come in the backdrop of the Cup Series’ debut in Mexico City. NASCAR took to Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez a couple of weeks ago, with an impressive round for fans in the Central American country. The track was the same circuit where Formula 1 has raced for several years now.

NASCAR made its debut in the streets of Chicago in 2023, with the race being held in the city’s downtown. While this track has become a success for the sport, it has not won over some old fans, who miss the Chicagoland Speedway.

Ryan Blaney insisted that he would like the Cup Series to make a return to Chicago Speedway. The Team Penske star recalled that the track had given the sport some incredible on-track action. Moreover, Blaney could not understand why the sport would actually remove the iconic Speedway from the calendar.

I wish we go back to Chicagoland. That place is great. It puts on a great race. I don’t know why we stopped going there in the first place. I guess, I do know. They wanted to go to the city of Chicago and not Joliet. I would love to see that track come back personally.

Ryan Blaney added

Chicagoland Speedway was an integral part of NASCAR, with the Cup Series racing at the track for almost two decades. The speedway last held a Cup Series race in 2019, before being removed from the calendar the following year.

Ryan Blaney might not be the only one interested in the return of Chicagoland Speedway. Though, such a possibility seems unlikely. NASCAR is trying to expand its reach, with a diverse calendar, which explains the rumors behind a San Diego street race. Fans will need to wait and see whether the stock car series decides on going back to Southern California soon.
