The NASCAR Cup Series’ return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval produced one of the most dramatic finishes of the 2024 season, with Kyle Larson surviving the chaos to come out victorious. The over-time restarts and fuel strategy caused multiple incidents including a big wreck that changed the whole direction of the race.

One such incident left defending Cup champion Ryan Blaney fuming on team radio and resulted in hen losing the race. It all started when he was racing alongside Brad Keselowski for the race win, with five laps to go. Just before the green flag, the RFK driver has to pit as he ran out of fuel gifting the inside lane to Larson, who was running P3.

On the restart Kyle Larson took the lead away from Blaney, just before a big wreck involving Denny Hamlin forced NASCAR to red flag the race. The Team Penske racer was furious as he felt the race was stolen from him with the red flag and went on an angry rant on radio calling the HMS driver the golden boy.

There’s no way they should’ve let that go green. That’s ridiculous. They just GAVE it to him (Larson). It’s f*cking over, I’m on the top. I ain’t gonna win from the top. Gave it to f*cking golden boy. Son of a b*tch.
Ryan Blaney said on Team Radio.

Kyle Larson might not get a second chance to attempt the Indy double

The 2024 NASCAR season saw Kyle Larson attempt the iconic Indy 500-Coke 600 double. But his attempt got ruined due to heavy rain, as he couldn’t make the Coke 600 start. But that hasn’t discouraged the driver as he is looking to make a second attempt this year.

I love you, Indiana fans, and I know you love me too… How ’bout we come back next May and try to kiss the bricks in the Indy car?
Kyle Larson shouted to the fans at Indy.

But the team owner Rick Hendrick isn’t sure if the double attempt would happen again. When asked about a potential return in 2025, Hendrick admitted on the stage standing alongside Jeff Gordon that they haven’t made a decision. It would be interesting to see if HMS invest the same time and resources next-season.
