The NASCAR Cup Series Throwback weekend race at Darlington Raceway was an event to forget for Ryan Blaney after he lost race owing to late race drama. The 2023 Bill France Cup winner came into the race looking for his maiden win of the season, and despite his team underdelivering on the pit’s he was able to take the lead with four laps to go.
As Ryan Blaney was leading the race, with Tyler Reddick just behind him, the latter’s’ 23XI racing teammate Bubba Wallace spun out 2021 Champion Kyle Larson, bringing out a caution. Everyone pitted under yellow, and a slow stop saw the No:12 Ford coming out P4 despite coming in early. Denny Hamlin came out ahead, dominated the final restart to secure consecutive wins.

After the race, 23XI’s co-owner and Hamlin business partner Michael Jordan, who was in attendance on the race day, came to congratulate Blaney for the solid race. During their short interaction, Jordan mentioned how close the Ford racer was to a win to which he teased the NBA legend hinting he lost because of Wallace. The basketball legend replied with the same playful vibe by acting confused, giving fans a hilarious and dramatic moment.

Ryan Blaney can’t blame Bubba Wallace for the incident
One reason Blaney is pretty disappointed at the same time chill about the incident is the fact the Bubba Wallace is closest friend. He understands the 23XI driver would never wreck Larson deliberately for caution to come out, but at the same time his friends mistake cost him a valuable race win, and ironically the win went to the latter’s boss.

The incident was majorly Kyle Larson’s fault. The No:5 Chevy got up-front of Wallace, despite being multiple laps down and when Reddick made contact with the wall suddenly checked up, hitting the breaks hard and slowed down.

The No:23 Toyota driver didn’t have any time to react as he was already racing pretty close to Larson’s bumper. This resulted in the wreck, that change the direction the race. Even HMS Crew Chief Cliff Daniels made the argument in favor of Wallace.
We didn’t catch Kyle Larson before he left, but Cliff Daniels said Kyle told him he felt bad about being part of the last caution. They were trying to stay out of the way of the leaders and stay low, and Larson checked up early to make sure he didn’t get into Reddick, but Bubba didn’t know Larson was going to slow down that much.

Ryan Blaney shouldn’t be disappointed with missing out on the win, as the string run on Sunday showed his team has made the correct changes with the car. If they can produce the same perfection with the execution on the track, it won’t take them much to secure the race win he longs for.
