Another road course race, another rookie masterclass as Shane van Gisbergen secured his second consecutive race win and third win of the 2025 season. He dominated the proceeding at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday in the Toyota / Save Mart 350, starting on pole, leading 97 of the 110 scheduled laps of the race.
Coming into the weekend the only question was if there were any drivers that could match Shane van Gisbergen’s superior road course racing prowess and the answer was no-one, as Kevin Harvick said last week, he is too good for the rest of the garage. With the third win, he is now closing in on the record of winningest rookie in the sports’ history, surpassing Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart.
Talking about his performance, after the race, he admitted that he feels amazing, had a great time behind the wheel and is thankful to his No:88 crew for giving him a solid Chevy for the race. He asserted that the team was perfect regarding execution in the pit-stop and on the track, making the win more special.
This is amazing. This is why we go racing. I had a great time. It’s awesome to have Red Bull on the car this weekend. Trackhouse Racing gave me a great Chevrolet again. What a great couple of weeks! Just to execute, make no mistakes, have great pit stops, great strategy and be able to hold them off there at the end – it’s incredible.

SVG then addressed the challenge he faced from Joe Gibbs Racing star driver Chase Briscoe. The No:19 Toyota driver was the only driver that gave him a good challenge on Sunday, with him making some aggressive moves on the final restart. So, securing the win against proper competition gives him the over the moon feeling every racer craves for.
Chase (Briscoe) was driving really well. We had a lot of fun there. … On the last restart, I thought he (Briscoe) jumped a little bit. I was just trying to do what I could to get in position in Turn 2. That last one, I had to give him a bit of rub, but that was it. I’m just over the moon.

Shane van Gisbergen is living a dream life in NASCAR
Further talking about the point, he gave the credit when its due by highlighting the hard work of his crew, that has stood tall with him through the tough oval racing weekends in the 2025 season. He is now hoping to use the momentum to his advantage and secure good results on ovals with 16 more races left in the season.

I just have to thank these [No. 88] guys. We’ve built up all year, got better and better, and now we need to keep getting better on the ovals and start proving some people wrong.

He then compared his three-championship winning stint in the Australian Supercars championship and how he is now living the dreams in the Cup Series. SVG is cherishing him time in the elite stock car racing series and is expecting this to last for many more years to come.
I had an amazing time in Australia [racing Supercars] and then to come here, the last couple of years has been [a] dream come true. I really enjoyed my time in NASCAR…[I] hope I’m here for a long time to come.
Shane van Gisbergen added.
The comments from the Kiwi racer, shows he is growing in confidence driving the Next-Gen car and is working hard to be better overall racer in the championship chase, with improved performance in ovals. It would be interesting to see how many more races it will take the veteran to secure his maiden oval win.
