Hollywood legend Tom Cruise helped skyrocket NASCAR’s popularity with the iconic film ‘Days of Thunder’ all the way back in 1990. After over three decades, fans of the sport are still waiting for a sequel to this project. Now, it appears that ‘Days of Thunder 2’ might actually be on the cards for Cruise.
The film industry has shown great interest in motorsport lately. Brad Pitt is starring in Lewis Hamilton’s dream F1 film, set to release on June 27 this year. This has only increased interest in a potential sequel for Days of Thunder.
Tom Cruise, who is currently promoting his film, ‘Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning,’ was asked if he was working on another ‘Top Gun’ movie. The Hollywood star gave an interesting response, stating that even Days of Thunder was on the cards. His comments virtually confirm that another NASCAR film might soon hit the cinemas. While NASCAR has always remained open to such a possibility, the sport has not addressed Cruise’s latest comments.
All of these things we’re working on. We’re discussing ‘Days of Thunder’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ There are numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now.
Tom Cruise told Today Show Australia.
NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon attends Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible premier
The comments from Tom Cruise are not in isolation. Things seem to be indicating that Hollywood is about to collaborate with NASCAR once again. Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon was recently invited to the premier for Mission Impossible with his family.

On X, Gordon posted a picture from the red carpet with his family at the premier. The NASCAR legend expressed gratitude towards Tom Cruise for bringing him to the red carpet. Though, such an instance might simply be a coincidence since Jeff Gordon has shared good relations with the Hollywood star, fans can always continue to speculate.
Thanks for rolling out the red carpet, @TomCruise!

The speculation over a second film has reached Jeff Gordon as well. The 53-year-old has had enough people ask him about a potential sequel. Thus, Gordon decided to end the debate for once and for all. The NASCAR legend admitted that Tom Cruise was keen on returning as Cole Trickle on the big screen soon.
I’ve been getting asked this a lot, so I’m going to go ahead and tell you: yes, he wants to have ‘Days of Thunder 2.’
Jeff Gordon told SiriusXMNASCAR.
Certainly, a sequel to Days of Thunder could once again bring millions of new fans to NASCAR. This could do wonders for the sport which has seemingly lost out to F1’s recent boom in popularity. However, so far there has been no official announcement about the project. As such, even if this film is on the cards, it might take a couple of years before it hits the big screens.
