Three times NASCAR Cup series champion Tony Stewart is one of the most accomplished and respected racers in the history of the sport. Over the years he has had run-ins and heated clashes with some of the best racers in the sport history, from Dale Earnhardt, Jimmie Johnson to Jeff Gordon. But he doesn’t see none of them as his biggest and favorite rivals.

Tony Stewart was recently asked to name his favorite driver in the Cars on Culture with Jason Stein podcast. He named late Kenny Irwin Jr., who he raced with from 1991, in their midget years, till the day he passed away, 2000.

I think my all-time favorite still is Kenny Irwin Jr. Like I said, Kenny and I started racing midgets against each other at the speed room in 1991 and both worked our way into all three national USAC series together.

Tony Stewart said via Cars on Culture with Jason Stein.

He was a fierce competitor that pushed Stewart beyond the limit from the early days, and someone who often had an upper hand in races, that involved the duo. Stewart also admitted that there were a lot of times where they were bitter enemies as well, while there were times, they were friends as well.

Kenny made me a better race car driver. There were times when we were bitter enemies. There were times when we were friends and hung out after races together.

Tony Stewart added.

Tony Stewart respected Kenny Irwin Jr. the most

In the same conversation, Stewart explained how much he respected Irwin Jr. as a friend and foe, as they pushed each other to better racers. He asserted that among all the drivers in his career the latter was the one he respected the most.

But the thing with Kenny and I is I feel like we both pushed each other. If he saw me at the race track and most definitely when I saw him at the track, I knew that it was not going to be an easy night…I would say, hands down, he was the competitor I respected the most.

Tony Stewart said.

The comments from Tony Stewart shows how much he respected love and respect he has for Kenny Irwin Jr. The former winning the New Hampshire Motor Speedway days after Irwin’s death over the practice run accident and dedicating it to him, shows everything there to know about their relationship.
