NASCAR is in Mexico this weekend. The sport will have its first-ever Cup Series race in Mexico City, at the iconic Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The stock car series is embracing the culture of the Central American country to get closer to its new fans. Though, it seems that drivers like Bubba Wallace need more time to adjust to the different culture.

When Wallace was coming for the official press conference, he was handed a lucha mask by NASCAR officials. Luchadores culture is an integral part of Mexican heritage and very important for its people. Bubba Wallace was delighted to get something of such significance, thanking the sport for this gesture.

I was just handed [a lucha mask] as I was walking over here, from NASCAR. The NASCAR team gave me this so I appreciate that… Do all drivers get one?

Bubba Wallace told Matt Weaver.

Unfortunately, he dropped the mask on the floor right after saying those words. The 23XI Racing star was then informed by reporters that it was disrespectful to remove this mask in public. Bubba Wallace took a lighthearted approach to this comment, admitting that he had much more to learn about luchadores, having just been introduced to the culture of Mexico.

Oh? I put it on in public. So if I had known that.. I would’ve done it properly… I’m new to the culture dawg.

Bubba Wallace added.

While it may seem that Wallace was dishonoring Mexican culture, he was genuinely interested in the lucha mask. The NASCAR star wasn’t even shy to admit that he really had no clue about how things were supposed to be. Certainly, a hilarious sight for fans.

Bubba Wallace bouncing back at road courses in NASCAR

Ever since Bubba Wallace made his debut in NASCAR in 2018, he has had one major weakness, road courses. While the 23XI Racing star has performed to the maximum at speedways, road courses have remained a chink in his armor. This was even shown in his Netflix documentary, ‘Race: Bubba Wallace.’ However, in the past two seasons, the 31-year-old has been trying to overcome this problem.

During the press conference, Bubba Wallace asserted that he and his team are doing a lot more for every road course race, claiming that things have finally started to click. He recalled that in 2018, Kasey Kahne had advised him about road car struggles, having gone through a similar phase in the past. Wallace reckoned that Kahne’s ‘click’ prediction had indeed come true for him now.

It’s starting to click. It takes me back to my rookie year (2018). We were sitting in the drivers meeting at Sonoma. I had qualified next-to-last or something, and Kasey Kahne walks up and says, ‘I was in the same boat once, and all of a sudden it just clicked.’ I feel like we’re in that transition period where it’s clicking.

Bubba Wallace said.

Certainly, Bubba Wallace has drastically improved as a driver in the past few seasons. But there is still a long way to go. The 23XI Racing star needs to consistently perform at the top of his game if he wants to make his way into the Playoffs this season. The Mexico race will be another indicator of whether Wallace can really take things to the front this year.
