Hendrick Motorsports star driver William Byron started the season strong with his second consecutive race win in the Daytona 500, becoming the first driver to secure playoff spot for the season. But he then had to wait 21 race weeks to secure the second win of the season, which came at Iowa. Amidst this winless streak, he was a consistent front runner alongside Chase Elliott.
The consistency helped William Byron to win his maiden regular season championship last race day at Richmond Raceway. Now with just the Daytona race left before the playoffs, with 9 top 5 runs including the win to his name, he has the momentum on his side. The major reason for his success is the fact that unlike in the past-season, he hasn’t been running under the radar in the summer.
Coming into the playoffs, this gives him an edge alongside the 15 points bonus he gets from winning the title. This makes him feel like he had found the rhythm and sync he has always been looking for ahead of the post-season this time. The No:24 Chevy driver believes he has been able to get over the criticism and doubts about his championship credentials.
I feel like we’ve had summers where we’ve been kind of under the radar, just completely out of it, not running well. Then we just turn it on in the playoffs. This year we’re coming in (to the playoffs), I feel like we’re in rhythm, in sync. I feel like it’s better this way honestly. I feel like the years we’ve been on the other side, it’s a lot of questions, a lot of doubt sort of that things are going to work out.
William Byron said via Speedway Media.
Further talking about the point, William Byron asserted that despite going through some tough races over the years, they have been strong and is some race the speed came easily to them. Now with one more races left in the regular season, he will be looking to continue performing on the same level, finish strong if not for a win and secure more positive momentum.
I feel like now we’ve been kind of through the wringer of a lot of different things this year. I mean, every race has kind of been different in terms of what we fight. There’s been some easier races with speed.
William Byron asserted.
Rudy Fugle keeps William Byron grounded and accountable
One of the major reasons for the No:24 teams over the years has been his crew chief Rudy Fugle, who made some bold and benefit yielding decisions this season. He keeps Byron accountable for his actions, keeps him grounded and always force him to execute on high standard as he should with Hendrick Motorsports.

I think there’s a lot of accountability between the two of us. He holds me to a high standard of my prep during the week, what is expected of me, how I execute. Like, he can see the small details that maybe a lot of people can’t.
William Byron said.
It’s something the Chevy driver appreciates the most and Fugle feedback on every small detail starting from the qualifying, is only making him a better racer. The relationship between the duo has evolved more than it has ever been in the 2025 season.
I appreciate that he can tell if I had a good qualifying lap or if I did little things with changes in my driving style. ‘Accountability’ is probably the word. That’s the evolution of the relationship this year. I even do that sort of back to him on strategy decisions or whatever it is. I kind of want that clarity and that picture.
William Byron added.
The comment from the young driver shows he is super confident about his chances in the 2025 championship chase, with Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell being his biggest challengers. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the racer in the reaming races of the season.
