Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz share one of the greatest rivalries in UFC history, a feud that remains alive nearly a decade later. Their first clash came at UFC 196, where Diaz shocked the world by handing McGregor his first UFC loss. For the unversed, the bout took place at welterweight and led to the Irishman gassing out pretty early and then getting choked out in the second round.

The setback brought out the best in McGregor, who became obsessed with getting one back at Diaz, and the duo eventually rematched at UFC 202. This iconic five-round bout saw the former double champ outlast Diaz and win by a decision. Now, almost nine years later, the Stockton native is seeking closure with a long-awaited trilogy fight.

For the unversed, Diaz parted ways with the UFC in 2022 to focus on building his boxing career, where he has faced big names like Jake Paul and former UFC foe Jorge Masvidal, defeating him in impressive fashion. At the recent DBX event, Diaz was asked about finally completing the trilogy with McGregor, and his response made it clear that he is ready to make it happen.

Nobody’s free so there ain’t nobody to fight. I want to fight three times a year, but everyone is f***king locked down. So it’s a matter of time. I’m trying to fight ASAP. Yeah (McGregor-Diaz) for sure. We’ll see what happens. Time will tell guys.

Dana White is already hyped about the White House event, which will be held to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US Independence Day. Recently, the CEO visited Washington to personally meet President Donald Trump, discussing future collaboration. McGregor has officially re-entered the drug testing pool in order to compete at the event, sparking fan skepticism due to his injury history and lengthy inactivity.

White, however, has given a green nod to McGregor’s return, expressing full confidence in his star fighter’s commitment and determination to compete again. In comparison, Jon Jones has also hinted at a comeback, yet White publicly doubts Jones’ consistency and long-term fighting intentions.

Many fans are experts are considering the fight card to be filled with American fighters, and Diaz vs. McGregor does make sense. Other big names to put against McGregor are Michael Chandler, who has been chasing this fight for over three years now.

However, for the UFC, choosing the biggest fight for the White House event makes the most sense. It will be interesting to see after the announcement around this bout is finally done.
