Dwight Howard and LeBron James won the 2020 NBA title for the Los Angeles Lakers

After LeBron James won his fourth NBA title in the 2020 bubble, the Los Angeles Lakers were naturally expected to defend it the following season. Instead, they crashed out in the first round of the playoffs. Other than the string of injuries that affected them, one of the reasons they lost some of their interior defense was because they did not have Dwight Howard with them.

The big man had moved to the Philadelphia 76ers that season. While speaking with Lakers owner Jeanie Buss on his Above the Rim with DH 12 podcast he said that he had wanted to be with the Lakers but was sad that he didn’t have an offer.

I was sad, I wanted to come back. What I was told was that you guys didn’t have an offer for me.”

Dwight Howard said

Buss shook her head and denied it. She said that the Lakers had in fact made an offer for him.

That’s not true. We made an offer, we did. It’s all about the salary cap and the timing.

Jeanie Buss replied

This revelation left Dwight Howard stunned as he had wanted to be with the Lakers and win another title. He then understood that his agent was the one who had messed it up. As per Howard, his agent informed him that the Los Angeles Lakers had rescinded their earlier offer.

Left with nothing, Howard chose to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. But now after all these years, he understood that the Lakers had an offer ready for him. It was just that they preferred it if the eight-time All-Star signed it at a later date so that they could clear cap space for other players.

NBA agent who robbed Dwight Howard and LeBron James off another ring convicted

Charles Briscoe is the agent who withheld the news of the Los Angeles Lakers contract from Dwight Howard. The same agent was part of a scheme that shattered the dreams of the former champion of owning a WNBA franchise.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst revealed that a jury found Briscoe and businessman Calvin Darden Jr. guilty of fraud and money laundering. They were allegedly part of a scheme that siphoned off money from the likes of Howard and another former NBA star Chandler Parsons. They allegedly spent the money on luxury cars and mansions.

It seems at the time that Briscoe had a vested interest in Howard not joining the Lakers. If he had helped the center return, it may have helped LeBron James have a fifth ring on his finger.
