Anyone who loves basketball knows that Allen Iverson is one of the greatest players of all time. A culture changer, the Philadelphia 76ers great is one of the reasons for the sweeping changes to the league that was once deemed boring.
In the 15 years since he left the sport, he became a Hall of Famer, and has since become more of a face of basketball’s global reach as he goes abroad for events.
Earlier this month, he travelled to Australia to be a part of a few events, one organized by the country’s National Basketball League, and another, a cancer charity event.

This was former Golden State Warriors star Andrew Bogut, who wrote a series of tweets to express his frustration about how Allen Iverson behaved in his country.

Bogut was referring to both the events, with his choicest words reserved for when he learned from a Reddit post about the 50-year-old’s ‘disgusting’ attitude towards children with cancer.

Iverson did not want to meet the children and did not bother apologizing, even though some parents drove hours to help their children meet their idol.
The incident has caused some furor with the Australian media, with many terming Allen Iverson’s motive as a ‘cash grab’ venture in their country.
Allen Iverson no-showed at a children’s fan event
Other than the cancer charity event, Allen Iverson was scheduled to take part in HoopsFest, organized by the NBL. At the show, journalists were left appalled by the superstar’s lack of interest.
Then, he was also supposed to meet and greet children at a fan event in Melbourne. Former NBA star and NBL great, Chris Anstey, wrote this along with a video he posted on Instagram.
Lots of super disappointed, near on distraught kids after Allen Iverson simply chose not to show up. Just really poor form. Great job to everyone who arrangedNd out on what would have been a ripper event.
Chris Anstey wrote
The former Dallas Mavericks and Chicago Bulls star mentioned that the organizers did a great job setting up the event. The props were perfect, as was the seating arrangement, and everything else associated with it.
It was just supposed to be a two-hour event, from two to four pm. He recorded the video at 4:15 pm and confirmed that, as of that time, one of the quickest players in NBA history was nowhere to be found.
The former center also mentioned how disappointed his son was, then proceeded to show his son visibly distraught by how one of his idols did not turn up for that event.
Allen Iverson’s behavior is unlike that of other NBA greats who have been in Australia
Allen Iverson is not the first NBA superstar to be invited by the National Basketball League to take part in Hoopsfest. Neither was he the lone basketball great to be invited to the other events.

Front Office Sports confirmed that Carmelo Anthony headlined Hoopsfest in September 2024. Former Boston Celtics championship-winning teammates Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen have also visited the country.
They were in attendance for the NBA x NBL Melbourne Series preseason games in October. However, neither of those events has brought out the furor that the 11-time All-Star has.
This might impact how the NBL and other Australian organizations deal with American NBA greats, as this event seemingly has left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth.
