The San Antonio Spurs have had a drastic season under the tutelage of Gregg Popovich. They recently entered the Salt Lake City to lock horns with the Utah Jazz with a 15-game losing streak. Things did not improve for them, as one might expect given their poor run of form.
Led by Lauri Markkanen, the Jazz trounced the Spurs 118-102 on Saturday night. This extended their losing streak to 16 games, and they dropped to 14-47 on the season. Legendary coach Popovich was the mastermind behind multiple Spurs’ dynasties over his decorated coaching career. However, this season is likely to be his worst in his 26-year-old career.
The Spurs have looked like a shadow of their former selves in recent seasons. The team was known for its discipline and commitment to playing championship basketball season after season under Popovich. But, things have take a nose dive as the franchise finds itself in a rut.
Popovich, speaking about his team’s sixteenth consecutive defeat while exhibiting his humorous side, remarked, “We played really well in the first half. Get off my a**. Two great quarters, and then it didn’t go very well… But what else is new, you’ve seen it before.
He went on to say that his team isn’t mature enough to handle the consistency and execution required in an NBA game. “We’re obviously not a 48-minute team. Just not mature enough to understand you got to keep it up. It’s a game of consistency and execution, keeping your competitiveness up,” he stated.
Gregg Popovich joked about his team’s struggles, but fans were not so generous
At the news conference, Gregg Popovich was his usual laid-back style, making light of his team’s struggles. Fans on Twitter, on the other hand, were not so compassionate. In fact, several came racing, wanting the legendary coach to call it quits.
Popovich tipped-off the start of a winning-era, leading the San Antonio Spurs to multiple NBA championships. However, many suggested that the Spurs should look for a new voice in the locker room after all these years. Several fans also argued that Spurs have been tanking to have a chance at landing the number one pick.
Several people concluded that the Spurs are clearly tanking in order to improve their chances in the 2023 NBA draft class. It will be interesting to watch what the future holds for Gregg Popovich and the Spurs, and whether they will be able to bounce back going ahead.
