Mike Breen talks about his popular television catchphrase 'Bang'

The name ‘Mike Breen‘ will always be associated with basketball fans. His trademark ‘Bang’ comments on TV have been a staple of historic NBA moments. Hearing him say that iconic word hypes up fans when he repeats it twice. However, he has not repeated the word thrice in a coverage and gives his one condition when he will unleash a historic ‘Triple Bang’.

In his latest appearance on Roommates Show with NBA’s Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson, Breen was pressed to admit if he would perform a highly anticipated ‘Triple Bang.’ Answering the question, he remarked that there would indeed be a ‘Triple Bang’ if any player hit a game-winning shot in the Finals.

They’re not premeditated but I’ll say this. If either of you guys hit ’em — anybody on the next. If you hit a game-winning shot in the Finals, there’ll be a triple bang.

However, this response was insufficient for New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson. The All-Star NBA player painted a situation where the New York Knicks would be down 3-0 in the NBA Finals and a player makes a game-winning shot.

Brunson asked Breen if this would warrant a ‘Triple Bang.’ However, the renowned sports commentator did not answer the question directly and instead complimented the question itself. It remains to be seen if the iconic commentator ever has to use Triple Bang in his career.

NBA commentator Mike Breen reveals the origins of his classic ‘Bang’

In the same episode, Mike Breen was also asked about the origins of his ‘Bang’ statements. This was not something Breen came up with when his career was solidified as a sports broadcaster in the NBA. According to him, he would yell out ‘Bang’ during awe-inspiring moments in basketball games, which he watched with his friends while he was a student at Fordham.

After getting a job in broadcasting, Breen reverted to using ‘Bang’ when he wanted his voice to be heard above that of the crowds during basketball games, and it stuck. During moments when the game is going exceptionally well, Breen has been known to use the word twice in a row. Until now, the renowned sports broadcaster has only used the ‘Double Bang’ six times.

The television audience looks forward to Mike Breen’s ‘Bang’ in every basketball game he broadcasts. However, he is not just known for this one word but also his simply fantastic play-by-play commentaries.

Mike Breen was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for his work in 2021. He also has won the Sports Emmy Award thrice for his play-by-plays. In addition, Breen was also Broadcaster of the Year in 1998.
