Russia’s invasion over Ukraine has sent shock waves all around the world, amid which Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner’s news added more catastrophe. The WNBA forward was arrested in Russia, was incarcerated for ‘large scale transportation of drugs’ after a bottle of cannabis oil was found on her in an airport. With the tension in Russia rising every moment, this situation has proved to be more sensitive than ever for Griner.
Politicians and athletes have come out to support Brittney Griner ever since the new broke out, but according to former hostage in Iran, Jason Rezaian, the United States Government should act on the situation more urgently than ever. Rezaian added that what might seem a light situation as of now, can take an ugly turn anytime.

Jason Rezaian urges US Government to act on Brittney Griner’s arrest in Russia
As per Washington Post, “It [US Government] should make clear that, if a detention of an American is found to be politically motivated, there will be swift and severe consequences. The current, long-standing public approach of responding in a diplomatic and noncommittal tone… actually ensures the opposite: It leaves our citizens languishing in prison, often for years, and signals to offenders that they can get away with it.”
Diplomatic issues aren’t as clear-cut as differing the tone of your statements, however. There’s undoubtedly a lot of things going on behind the scenes to free the Mercury star, Brittney Griner. Hopefully, this issue gets resolved quickly and as cleanly as possible.
The problems on the hand of Russia are much bigger than the arrest of Mercury star Brittney Griner, which perhaps may be the reason, her arrest should be taken even more urgently. Griner has been reached out by the authorities ever since the news broke out, but will she be able to come out of Russia in near future? Is what remains to be seen. Hopefully, WNBA and basketball fans can hear a positive news soon.
