Giannis Antetokounmpo before the all-star game started, pulled the attention of the NBA universe to his new partnership with the messaging brand WhatsApp. Just ahead of Sunday, he was seen passing by Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse wearing an adire-style corduroy hoodie with the number +234 on the front which is the international calling code in Nigeria, and “Adetokunbo” on the back.

Bucks star Antetokounmpo with this gesture tried to pay tribute to his roots in Nigeria where he was born and announced his new partnership with a global brand. WhatsApp is the biggest messaging app in the world with over 2 billion users in 180 countries, it is also the leading messaging app in countries like India and Brazil.

With this deal, Giannis has become the first global partner for the messaging service owned by Meta Platforms Inc., after signing a long-term deal he will now be the brand ambassador for WhatsApp and try to promote it to the different corners of the globe. Moreover, the financial terms and conditions regarding the deals weren’t revealed.

Meanwhile talking about the endorsement in an interview Giannis shared about his personal experience and how this app helped him to connect with his roots in Nigeria. ”It’s an app I use daily. At the end of the day, I make decisions based on what makes me happy and how I can help.”

Later he also added, “link to home in Greece and a link to my family roots in Nigeria”.

The Greek freak parents were Nigerian immigrants in Greece, in 2013 he became the part of NBA when he was drafted to the Milwaukee Bucks’ In the video, he shared about his past Nigerian background and also seemed to be excited to work with the new brand. He said:

“Those who know my story know that I’m Greek and Nigerian: I was raised in Greece, but my roots are Nigerian. Growing up the best way I could connect to my family in Nigeria was through WhatsApp. As humans, we’re a collection of experiences, and learning about where I came from has kept me close to my identity as I continue to evolve as an athlete and person.”
