“He had nothing to do with the moves they made in the off-season” Kendrick Perkins does not believe former Lakers coach Frank Vogel is the reason for their failure
Kendrick Perkins and Frank Vogel
News has broken out that the Los Angeles Lakers have fired Head Coach Frank Vogel after a very disappointing overall season. Though the Lakers finished their regular season with a victory over the Denver Nuggets 146-141 in overtime, the positivity has not been present for a majority of the season. Almost a week ago, the hopeful team fought for their chance to participate in the play-in tournament but ultimately failed to get themselves past the top-ranked team in the league.
Frank Vogel had only found out about his dismissal after the regular-season finale and was quick to reply to the reporters saying, “I haven’t been told s**t and I’m going to enjoy tonight’s game, celebrate what these young guys did in terms of scratching and clawing and getting back in this game and getting a W, and we’ll deal with tomorrow, tomorrow.” The Lakers finished the season as the 11th seed in the Western Conference, and Vogel coached the team during the 2019-20 season when they won the franchise’s 17th ring that year.
Los Angeles Lakers speak on the dismissal of Head Coach Vogel
Los Angeles Lakers general manager, Rob Pelinka spoke on the dismissal of their head coach saying, “This is an incredibly difficult decision to make, but one we feel is necessary at this point. When you have disappointment you need to take ownership of that and make adjustments to be better. Today’s not going to be a day of finger-pointing or unwinding all the specific reasons. We just felt organizationally, that it was time for a new voice.”
LeBron James also spoke on Vogel’s firing, he said, “I respect Frank as a coach, as a man. The partnership that we’ve had over the past few has been nothing but just candid, great conversations. He’s a guy who gives everything to the game. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’ve got nothing but respect for him.”
Kendrick Perkins does not believe Los Angeles Lakers did the right thing
During this season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a tough time utilizing their roster especially after having multiple players in and out of the lineup due to injuries. Vogel also admitted that it was a factor that affected the system at many levels. Unfortunately, the team would finish with only 33 wins and 49 losses this season.
Kendrick Perkins would speak up on the situation saying, “We knew it was going to happen, we just didn’t know when. And its unfortunate because really believe that he didn’t deserve to be fired. Frank Vogel won a championship with this team, Frank Vogel had nothing do to with the moves that they made in the off-season. He was just told to coach this team.” He also said, “How you not willing to be man to man and tell this man face to face that he’s lost his job?” Perkins felt that the Lakers did not treat Vogel the right way. He further highlights the fact that the Lakers also offered him a coaching job.
