“He’s going to come back with a different type of energy and mindset”: Kendrick Perkins wants Anthony Davis to have a major influence on Lakers after return

Kendrick Perkins and Anthony Davis

Kendrick Perkins is a retired NBA player who now is a host at ESPN’s First Take and also a player analyst for the same company. Recently ahead of Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets match-up Kendrick discussed Anthony Davis as he praised him while wanting him to step up for the team. Not many analysts around and in the league are like Kendrick since Anthony Davis before his injury was the most criticized player in Los Angeles as he didn’t play to the level everyone expected him to.

The Los Angeles Lakers recently played against the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center and had Anthony Davis scheduled to return after being sidelined for a month due to an MCL sprain. The game resulted in favoring the Los Angeles Lakers as Brooklyn Nets was missing Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving due to injuries and LeBron James again stepped up with an MVP calibre performance. Anthony Davis in the game had a successful return as playing for 25 minutes he was athletic and explosive catching lobs. In his return, he dropped 8 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and had 1 steal with four highlight-worthy blocks.

In the 10 points, win of the Lakers against the short-handed Nets has hopes back in the air since Anthony Davis brought back the center gameplay and also provided mobility. Currently, the Los Angeles Lakers are ranked as the 8th seed in the western conference with the record tied at 24 wins and 24 losses at .500. On the other end, the Brooklyn Nets are currently ranked as the 3rd seed in the eastern conference with the record of 29 wins and 18 losses at .617.

Anthony Davis is not only the second-best guy the Lakers have onboard but is also their most important piece. As sticking with the role of center with his size he can play beyond the arc too while shooting swishes around which is something the Lakers really need to win. Since having many veterans on board they run the game with limited speed and end up with team chemistry issues because of no fixed line-ups.

Kendrick correctly predicted Anthony Davis’ return as before the game discussing the All-Star he quoted: “I just think he needs to go out there and be the best version of him. Right like sitting on the sideline, you have a different appreciation for the game. You could also see how you could impact the game and you start to miss the game. I just want to see him go out there and play with passion. … I think he’s going to come back with a different type of energy and mindset.”

Anthony Davis did that all as Perkins quoted. He looked confident and was great on both the ends catching lobs and blocking lay-ups something fans enjoy watching him do. But with play-off and trade deadline nearing Davis has more responsibilities than ever on his shoulders. As he is the only supporting cast that can be trusted alongside LeBron James because in his absence we saw many players fall short to deliver and back up the King to win the game.

Anthony Davis this season averages 22.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 2.1 blocks. An All-Star stat-line every player dreams to have. But it was never the numbers the Lakers got him for it was always the impact he had on the game. For the team to make it to the playoffs and have a good mad run AD must improve his shooting especially his jumper and stay strong on defense.
