Sydney Carter
Sydney Carter recently responded to the criticism she is been getting on the internet for her in-game outfits. It all started weeks ago when Carter herself shared a photo of her from Game 22 on February 6 against the Kentucky Wildcats. That particular game she was wearing tight pink leather pants paired with a white turtleneck, clear heels and a pink breast cancer awareness pin at her chest. This outfit of her got her in the headlines as many criticized her saying that the outfit isn’t good for a basketball game especially when you are on the coaching staff.
Sydney Carter has been on a journey for so many years from playing at the collegiate level, making it to the WNBA getting the right recognition in the league and also playing pro overseas. But it isn’t any of these achievements that have her in the headlines as fans being critical of her in-game attire have her viral on the internet. Fans are making bold claims and statements referring to her outfits as many say she should be fined and the outfits are completely inappropriate for a coach.

Many fans around the globe are also standing in Sydney Carter’s support as they respect her choice. Even her team posted a photo of her quoting: “Let them talk. We got your back ?.” Finally, after weeks of criticism, Sydney Carter stood up to defend herself as she has been appearing in many interviews with the only purpose of motivating the younger generation to be who they want to be and stop worrying about what others think or quote on the internet.

In an interview with Yahoo, defending herself and her in-game attire Sydney Carter quoted: “I just think that people are uncomfortable with a black woman being in a power position. When you see a black woman who is actually confident and embracing herself, I think that that’s very intimidating. You hear so many times that people don’t want to watch women play basketball, because there’s too many that look manly, or they play like a guy or don’t play enough like guys. Women can never satisfy anybody in any aspect of life. Just as a woman, it’s hard enough. It’s hard enough that we’re not paid the same or that people think that we can’t do some of the same things or something as well as men in a male-dominated industry.”

Further talking about the criticism and the hate Sydney has been getting on the internet just because of her outfits she said: “I’m unapologetically myself every day, I could care less if anybody thinks that I’m being extra. I’m not gonna turn up turn my light off because somebody else is offended or intimidated by the fact that I embrace myself. I think a lot of college kids these days struggle with being confident and embracing who they really are because they are afraid of what the world will say. And I hope that I am a living example of who cares what they say.”
Sydney Carter also made it very clear that she wasn’t trying to start any trend or something as she quoted: “I wasn’t trying to kick down any barriers. At the end of the day, I wasn’t trying to set a trend. I just wanted to be myself.” The message all these days in different interviews from her side has been pure as she is embracing the hate and trolls. But unfortunately, the critics continue to target her as she tries to motivate her team and the other younger generations to be what they want to be while not worrying about others.
