“It’s a great comparison”- Carmelo Anthony on Los Angeles Lakers’ comparison with Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Carmelo Anthony on Los Angeles Lakers compared to Tom Brady's Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Los Angeles Lakers are not having as good a season as the fans or even they themselves would have expected. The Lakers after halfway mark into their campaign, are 7th in the Western Conference with a 21-20 record. What is especially worrying is the fact that the Lakers are struggling to defeat good teams and having close wins against the bottom teams.
However, there is some positivity in the Lakers’ camp to hold on to. Before the season even started, LeBron James compared the group to the NFL’s championship-winning 2020-21 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs were able to end their championship drought last season by adding the legend Tom Brady to the team. The Bucs would go on to become NFL champions even after a rocky start, defeating the favorites Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl LV last year.

The Los Angeles Lakers are going through a similar phase right now from the looks of it. In the offseason, they acquired a lot of veteran pieces. As a result, the Lakers are now the oldest team in the NBA in terms of average age, which comes down to ~31 years. They acquired Russell Westbrook, 31 along with veterans such as DeAndre Jordan, Carmelo Anthony, Rajon Rondo, Dwight Howard, and Trevor Ariza. This makes the comparison of 2021-22 Los Angeles Lakers to 2020-21 Tampa Bay Buccaneers very reasonable. Both have veteran players led by the kingpin of the league.

Carmelo Anthony likes the Los Angeles Lakers-Bucs comparison
Carmelo Anthony in a recent interview expressed his agreement to this comparison. Carmelo said as quoted by ESPN – “Just from the standpoint of starting off slow and having new guys on the team. New system. Guys trying to figure it out, guys trying to figure out how to play with LeBron and [Anthony Davis] and now incorporating Russ and just now everybody figuring out what their role is. And what made it beautiful for the Bucs is that once it came together, it came together and you saw what happened with that.”
Carmelo also added – “It’s a great comparison. It’s something that we look forward to. We listen to it, we hear it. It’s a great comparison. I don’t think it’s something that we think about on a daily basis. We just have some type of analogy to compare it to, and what better team and what better situation to compare it to than what the Bucs did last year?”
This is certainly something the Lakers can look up to while facing criticism from experts and fans alike. The Bucs have shown that finishing well even after a bad start is not impossible for an aging squad or a veteran group.
